The Tennessee Volunteers will host the No.7 Oregon Ducks in their first meeting ever on Saturday, September 11th at 7 pm EST at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, TN.

The questions surrounding how well the Ducks would perform after multiple offseason transgressions including the departure of QB Jeremiah Masoli and the one-game suspension of running back LaMichael James were answered, as Oregon blew by New Mexico 72-0 in their record-smashing season opener.

Granted New Mexico is not considered a top-flight team, but 72-0?

Running back Kenjon Barner, mainly a return specialist last season, aptly led Oregon to an easy victory rushing for 147 yards and matching the school’s modern-day record with five touchdowns, including one on a 60-yard reception.

Oregon also got 220 yards and two touchdowns from new quarterback Darron Thomas, who replaced the heralded Masoli, on his way to racking up a school-record 720 yards.

But their bout with Vols will be much tougher, and the team will be more than happy to welcome back James, who is expected to return from his suspension for Oregon’s trip to SEC country and the 102,000-plus seat Neyland Stadium of Tennessee.

His reinstatement back into the lineup will give the Ducks added firepower, as the running back tallied a team-best 1,546 yards and 14 touchdowns as a freshman for the Ducks’ Pac-10 championship squad a tear ago.

The defense was dominant as well, posting the school’s first shutout since a 35-0 blanking of Stanford in 2003.

Meanwhile, the Volunteers is coming off its first shutout in seven years, with a 50-0 win over Tennessee-Martin in Derek Dooley’s coaching debut.

Tauren Poole rushed for 110 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the way while getting some help from the defense on Prentiss Wagner’s 54-yard interception return and Austin Johnson’s safety.

The Volunteers’ defense did a good job stopping the run at the line of scrimmage, snaring two interceptions and keeping UT Martin out of the red zone. But the Skyhawks, are a young FCS team with undersized players, and really didn’t afford the Vols much of an opportunity to measure their abilities.

Now they will get a much better idea of what kind of defense they have against Oregon’s speedy spread offense that poses a threat with both a solid passing and running game.

But Tennessee can’t just leave its defense out on the field for 60 minutes, and will need new starting QB Matt Simms and his young receivers to step it up in Week 2.

The junior tossed for 220 yards and one TD in his first stint under center since 2008, and will need to overcome the absences of top receiver Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore. Jones, who led the team with six catches for 86 yards last week will miss at least two games with a broken bone in his left hand, while Moore, who ran 58 yards for a touchdown and caught a 42-yard scoring pass in last week’s win, is questionable with ankle injuries. Freshman Zach Rogers is expected to start in place of Jones.

Coach Kelly has taken things to an extreme level in making sure his Ducks are ready to get the job done; holding the team’s practices inside the Moshofsky Center where music reached rock concert decibels in an effort to simulate what the Ducks will be dealing with at Neyland Stadium. To bet against Oregon in this one is a risky proposition.
