(14) Virginia Tech Hokies (8-2)

Oh, what could have been! One close loss to Boise State. One upset loss to James Madison. And nothing but sheer destruction of the competition since.

Virginia Tech has been on an absolute tear over its last eight games, winning by at least 10 points seven times. Tyrod Taylor continues to blossom as a dual-threat quarterback. He now has 18 touchdown passes and four picks on the year while rushing for 581 yards and three scores. Darren Evans and Ryan Williams form a nice rushing tandem to complement Taylor’s feet. Each back topped 80 yards in last week’s win over North Carolina. The Hokies now average 208.5 rushing yards per game.

Virginia Tech is no slouch defensively, either. Say what you want about its schedule being soft, but last week’s effort against UNC was very impressive. Tar Heels quarterback T.J. Yates had been on fire and Virginia Tech picked him off four times on the road. The Hokies have the country’s No. 22 pass defense, allowing 188 yards per contest. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

(24) Miami Hurricanes (7-3)

It’s time to use the dreaded two words: quarterback controversy. OK, maybe I’m a bit ahead of myself, but you have to admit that Stephen Morris has been capable replacing injured starter Jacory Harris for Miami. His four interceptions suggest he’s still raw but Morris does have four touchdown passes and has thrown for 516 yards over his last two games – both Miami victories.

Morris may get another start this week with Harris’ concussion possibly keeping him out again. Morris will have plenty of support from Miami’s running game, which got Damien Berry back last week and averages 185.8 yards per game.

The pick:

As a ranked team playing at home, Miami is tough to bet against, but I still recommend doing so. The Hurricanes’ athletic “D” ranks third against the pass but is quite suspect against the run, ranking 77th in the country with 166.4 yards allowed per game. I’m not convinced the ’Canes can handle the three-headed monster of Taylor, Evans and Williams on Saturday. Look for Virginia Tech to continue its dominant run.
