No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas A&M Aggies Preview

Texas A&M (5-3) has won 2 games in a row after dropping 3 straight and this Saturday they host the 8th ranked Oklahoma Sooners (7-1), who are in first place in the Big 12 South. College football lines have Oklahoma as 3-point favorites in this game with a total of 60.5.

The Sooners were the top-ranked team in the nation a couple of weeks ago, but lost to Missouri. However, they are still on track to play in the conference championship game and they can ensure that if they win the rest of their games. That is not easy task, as their last 2 games of the season are on the road facing 21st ranked Baylor and 17th ranked Oklahoma State, who have 2 of the best offenses in the nation.

Texas A&M is one win away from being bowl eligible, but after 8th ranked Oklahoma they still have to face 7th ranked Nebraska, 21st ranked Baylor, and Texas. They will be a little shorthanded in this game since starting RB Christine Michael is out after breaking his leg in the Aggies’ last game.
This season both teams are 4-4 ATS. Even though they are the favorite in this game the Sooners have only covered the spread 1 time in their last 7 games at Texas A&M. However, the Aggies are only1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog of 0.5-3.

In their last games Texas A&M beat Texas Tech 45-27 and Oklahoma killed Colorado 43-10.

Texas A&M has one of the best passing offenses in the nation ranking 6th in passing yards per game. Even though they lost their starting QB backup Ryan Tannehill is no slouch with his arm and in the win over Texas Tech he had a HUGE game passing for 449 yards with 4 TD. The WR tandem of Jeff Fuller and Ryan Swope combined for 276 receiving yards last week and will be a handful for the Sooners’ secondary. Speaking of the OU secondary they have really struggled this season defending the pass only ranking 83rd in the nation.

The Aggies will need another good game from their rushing offense, which racked up 174 yards last week, so the Sooners’ D does not only focus on defending the pass. Oklahoma’s run defense ranks 50th in the nation and last week they stepped it up holding Colorado to only 76 yards on the ground.

For the Aggies to have any chance to win their passing offense has to play well. For that to happen QB Ryan Tannehill has to stay upright. This season the Aggies’ offensive line has struggled only ranking 113th in the nation giving up 27 sacks. That is not a good stat since the OU pass rush is legit taking down the QB 19 times on the season.

OU has the nation’s 5th ranked passing offense and last week QB Landry Jones passed for a career-high 453 yards and 4 TD’s against Colorado. He has a great corps of receivers, especially WR Ryan Broyles, who had 208 receiving yards last week with 3 TD. OU also rushed for 147 yards in the win last week, but this week will be facing a great run defense of the Aggies, which ranks 8th in the nation. However, the bad news for A&M is that their pass defense ranks 101st in the nation and last week gave up 356 yards in the air to Texas Tech.

The Aggies will need to pressure Jones so he does not pick apart the secondary. However, A&M only has 15 sacks on the season and Oklahoma’s offensive line is big and solid and they will give Jones good protection in this game, which spells doom for the Aggies.

I am surprised the Aggies are only getting 3 points in this game. Oklahoma will have a big day in the air and they will not turn the ball over, which killed them in their only loss of the season to Missouri. Oklahoma will show why they are a legit National Championship contender and Texas A&M will show why they are 0-3 against teams that are currently ranked. The Sooners will easily win this game and cover the spread.

Pick: Oklahoma -3
