(3) Boise State Broncos

Is this the year the third-ranked Boise State Broncos make the jump from upstart, “small-conference” school to national champion? Logically, it could be the next step. After all, Boise State went 14-0 last season and knocked off TCU in the Fiesta Bowl.

It’s hard not to get excited about the Broncos, who have enjoyed life in the Western Athletic Conference (49-4 record over last four seasons) but are excited for the bump up to the MWC next year. The high-octane offense, which scored 42-plus points per game last season, has all the pieces in place to go wild again.

Kellen Moore is back under center and the team has all but one starter returning for 2010. He had an unbelievable 39 touchdowns versus just three picks last year – the best ratio in NCAA history. Moore has solid help around him, including receivers Austin Pettis and Titus Young plus tailback Jeremy Avery, who rushed for over 1,110 yards last season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Broncos aren’t defensive slouches either, having allowed just 17.1 points per game a year ago.

(10) Virginia Tech Hokies

Some bettors consider No. 10 Virginia Tech the anti-Boise State. Whereas the Broncos love the run and gun offense, the Hokies routinely get it done with outstanding defense.

Virginia Tech allowed just 15.6 points per game last year and boasted the nation’s 11th-ranked pass defense. However, we have to ask ourselves if those defensive numbers mean anything this year considering the Hokies lost seven starters from last year’s team.

In fact, 2010 may be the year Virginia Tech transitions from a defense-first school to an offensive powerhouse – kind of like what we’re seeing with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor is ready to take his game to new heights after a decent first season as a starter. He threw for 2,311 yards last season. Taylor also ran for 370 yards and has 18 career rushing touchdowns. He’ll be a handful for Boise State.

And what about the two-headed monster Virginia Tech has in the backfield? Darren Evans was the man in 2008, running for 1,265 yards. When he went down with a torn ACL last season, “backup” Ryan Williams  one-upped him, breaking the ACC freshman yardage record with 1,655 while running for 21 scores. Now, VT can use both these guys on hapless defenses.

BSU at Va Tech Gambling Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 6 of Boise State’s last 8 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Boise State’s last 6 games
Virginia Tech is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
Virginia Tech is 13-1 SU in its last 14 games at home
Boise State is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
Boise State is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games on the road
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Virginia Tech’s last 7 games
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Virginia Tech’s last 13 games at home

The pick:

This should be a fun one, as both teams have lofty goals this season – especially Boise State. I like the Broncos on Monday. While they’re not playing at a true neutral site – Maryland’s proximity to Virginia almost makes it a home game for the Hokies – the Broncos’ offense could overwhelm the suddenly inexperienced Virginia “D.” The Hokies will get their points too but they won’t quite keep up in what should be an entertaining season opener.

Boise State vs Virginia Tech prediction: Boise State 30, Virginia Tech 21
