Sun Belt Conference Football Previews: Middle Tennessee St.

The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders have been building up their program very successfully under Rick Stockstill, but this year they have the potential to take it to another level. The talent is there for this team to win the Sun Belt Conference and make some serious noise in the non-conference schedule as well. Can they put it all together in 2010?

Dwight Dasher is the Sun Belt’s best player overall, so the Blue Raiders have a great senior leader under center. The Blue Raiders are talented across the board, which isn’t the case with most teams in the Sun Belt Conference.
The fact that they should be able to do it both with a great offense and a solid defense should help this team immensely this season.
Team Strengths:
The dual-threat ability of Dwight Dasher is a huge plus for this team. Dasher is a terrific runner and can beat teams on the ground consistently.
He has improved his passing ability greatly over the past couple years and he threw for almost 2,800 yards in 2009.
The secondary of this defense should be a real strength. There is little doubt that the Blue Raiders will have the best secondary in the Sun Belt in 2010. Jeremy Kellem and Kevin Brown are a great pair at safety, and both cornerbacks are solid in coverage.
The offensive line returns four of five starters and the Blue Raiders should definitely be able to protect Dwight Dasher effectively. The fact that Dasher will have plenty of time to throw, or create something out of nothing, will make this team tough to beat.
Team Weaknesses:
The Blue Raiders lost two of their top three wide receivers from 2009, so they’ll need some new guys to step up. Garret Anderson will be the main man, but in an offense like this they will certainly need some other options as well.
Antonio Davis is strong at the linebacker spot, but the other two starters will be very inexperienced. The Blue Raiders could very well end up with missed assignments from their youngsters in the linebacker unit.
The defensive line will definitely miss Chris McCoy at the defensive end spot. He was the co-Defensive Player of the Year in the conference in 2009. The line will be solid, but can they keep putting pressure on the quarterback?
Middle Tennessee St. 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 11-2
I think the Blue Raiders have a good chance to be your Sun Belt Conference Champions in 2010. The biggest games in their conference schedule are the road game at Arkansas State and the home game against Troy.
This team has been unable to beat Troy at all of late, but they have the talent to do so at home this year.
I expect the Blue Raiders to start the season off with a nice non-conference win over Minnesota. This team is likely to be a little better than last year’s, so expect the Blue Raiders to have a great 2010 campaign!
