Mississippi St. Bulldogs 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015 Football Previews – (SEC) – Bulldogs

The Mississippi State Bulldogs burst into the national spotlight as the darling team of 2014, picking up a rare double-digit win season. However, with that breakout now comes increased expectations for a program that hasn’t shown it can regularly put together that kind of success.

Southeastern Conference 2015 College Football Preview – Mississippi State Bulldogs
Head Coach: Dan Mullen
2014 Record: 10-3
Mississippi State Odds to win the SEC: 40-1

Head coach Dan Mullen has done a great job of increasing the talent in Starkville, and getting the most out of his boys, but the SEC West is not for the faint of heart. Coming out of nowhere and catching opponents by surprise is one thing, but now the SEC will be gunning for Mississippi State.

The team’s talent came together nicely in 2014, and the Bulldogs were a lot closer to making it into the inaugural College Football Playoff than many might think. Given how much the committee valued conference championships, had the Bulldogs won the Egg Bowl, they likely would have been the ones facing Missouri in the SEC title game. Instead, a 31-17 loss against Ole Miss in Oxford crushed any playoff hopes Mississippi State might have had, but all in all it was a very successful season.

Team Strengths

The team’s success this upcoming season will depend heavily on the play of senior quarterback Dak Prescott. He led a group of veterans a year ago, and now has to take his production to the next level as the team endures some turnover. Most schools didn’t recruit him as a quarterback, but Mississippi State gave him the chance to throw, and now the Bulldogs are reaping the rewards.

Junior defensive tackle Chris Jones came to town with some hype, and the team could really stand to have him live up to that this season. He can play inside or outside along the line. He’s great off the snap, and now is the time for him to make the line his own.

Team Weaknesses

The Bulldogs were great at stopping the run and got after the quarterback well last season, but they had some real issues against the pass. New defensive coordinator Manny Diaz will have to fix while losing seven starters. The secondary ranked 114th in the nation a year ago.

The offense will need to do a better job of coming away with points in the red zone. The team came away from the red zone empty twice against Alabama in a game they lost by five, and went 1-for-3 against Ole Miss. Even in their opener against Southern Miss, the Bulldogs converted on just 1-of-4 tries.

2015 Mississippi State Bulldogs Prediction: 7-5

The Bulldogs will have played LSU, Auburn, and Texas A&M by Oct. 3, so that will let them know earl whether a repeat of their 2014 season is in the cards or not. Outside of those game, their four non-conference matchups are absolute cakewalks.

Drawing Missouri and Kentucky on the crossover isn’t all that bad, even if they do have to go to Mizzou. At least that game follows a bye. The team plays on the road just once in a six week span from Oct. 10 to Nov. 21.

The start to the Bulldogs’ season is so important because of how difficult their schedule get down the stretch. In the month of November they’ll play at Missouri, against Alabama, at Arkansas, and against Ole Miss. If they don’t have a sixth win entering that stretch, they may not go bowling.
