The Spartans were fueled by UM’s ‘little brother’ comments last season, and with a talent level constantly being upgraded, it might not be long until State starts playing like a twin sibling – especially if it can improve its showings versus the Big Ten’s elite teams. In a word, Michigan State’s linebacker corps should be fantastic.

Conference heavyweights Greg Jones and Eric Gordon will be supplemented with super frosh Chris Norman; the unit even has depth with upperclassmen Adam Decker and Jon Misch.

While consummate vet QB Brian Hoyer has moved on, the position is rejuvenated with highly-regarded Oklahoma transfer (and Michigan native) Keith Nichol.

Impressive freshman running back Edwin Baker should join Nichol in the Spartan backfield.

Team Strengths
We’ve mentioned the ‘backers: MSU got rolled by Penn State 49-18 last season, but it’s the Spartans that have a Nittany Lions-esque linebacker group in ’09. In the secondary, cornerbacks Ross Weaver and Chris L. Rucker (his brother Chris D. Rucker is a wideout on the team) represent size and athleticism. Nichol should be more dynamic than Hoyer was and senior WR Blair White should produce heartily after 43 receptions in 2008.

Left guard Joel Foreman was a first team freshman All-American last year, and TE Charlie Gantt is underrated.

Team Weaknesses
The offensive line breaks in a couple new starters in Jared McGaha and Canadian J’Michael Deane. With the notable exception of end Trevor Anderson’s eight sacks, the D-line is pretty underwhelming. And while Baker is pretty hype, he’s not 1,600+ yard and 22 TD Javon Ringer.

Ringer, now in the NFL, basically was the Spartan offense last season.

East Lansing is looking to shake the underachiever label and this team has the talent to make a mark in the conference. And maybe even continue to make a Mark, if Coach D continues to assemble quality recruiting classes like he did this off-season.

Fans will lament the absence of Ringer, but over the next few seasons MSU should give them something to improve their moods.

2009 Michigan St. Spartans Record Prediction: 9-4

The MSU offense last season was pretty much handing the ball to running back Javon Ringer and letting him do his thing. On the year Ringer tallied an incredible 390 carries. Now he is gone and the Spartans will have to diversify their offense.

The Spartans did not have the greatest defense in the Big Ten, but with eight starters returning, the unit could be even better. The strength is in the middle with linebackers Greg Jones, Adam Decker and Eric Gordon. Jones led the team with 127 tackles and that was just as a sophomore.

Now there is a quarterback controversy in East Lansing as Kirk Cousins battles it out with Keith Nichol. No matter who the quarterback ends up being, there are plenty of young playmakers to pass the ball to. The quarterbacks and the receivers have to play better if the Spartans want to be in the mix for a Big Ten title.
