The Virginia Tech Hokies topped many bettors’ BCS sleeper lists this offseason, as they were thought to have a great defense that simply needed a bettor offensive effort to break into contention. Well, for the most part, the offense hasn’t answered the call. Tyrod Taylor has the feet to make the odd big play, but let’s face it – he’s a major reason why VT’s passing offense ranks 106th in the country. Taylor has completed 50 per cent of his passes or better just once in three games so far this season.

The Hokies have run the ball better than expected without injured Darren Evans, but defenses will start stacking the box against Ryan Williams if Thomas doesn’t get the aerial attack going.

Miami’s offense, on the other hand, looks potent and balanced. Jacory Harris’s 184.1 rating is third in the nation and the running back tandem of Graig Cooper and Javarris James has helped keep defenses honest. The ’Canes can score and they can do so in multiple ways.

At the beginning of the year, any betting management expert would’ve told you Virginia Tech had the defensive edge in this matchup, but is that still the case now? Miami’s front seven are exceeding expectations. They allowed 472 rushing yards to Georgia Tech in 2008 yet held the Yellow Jackets to 95 yards in last week’s rematch. How’s that for improvement? VT is going the other way, as its supposedly solid unit allowed 207 rushing yards in a close win over Nebraska.

Believe it or not, Miami is primed for another road win. Its balanced attack will confuse Virginia Tech and its swarming “D” won’t give Thomas time to think. Bet on Miami and watch the BCS buzz swell even more next week.
