Miami Hurricanes 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015 Football Previews – (ACC) – Miami

After another disappointing season for the Miami Hurricanes, the hot seat under Al Golden is getting even hotter. Fans of the program are losing their patience as the team continues to be mired in mediocrity. And the issue certainly has been the talent, as evidenced by the litany of representation in February’s NFL Combine.

Turning that talent into a team that wins on a consistent basis hasn’t been easy for a coaching staff that guided the squad to a 6-7 record a year ago. The last time the program picked up a postseason victory was 2006 – the final year of Larry Coker’s tenure.

The plethora of talent to recruit in Florida has helped, as has the program’s rich tradition, but attracting all that elite talent and not turning that talent into a winning team on the field is on the staff.

Team Strengths

The Hurricanes coaching staff worked very hard to recruit Brad Kaaya, and he outperformed even their expectations as a rookie. He’s the face of the program as a sophomore, coming off being named ACC Rookie of the Year.

While his two favorite targets from a year ago are gone, some of that production could be made up for with a bounce back season from junior wide receiver Stacy Coley. After a breakout season as a freshman, Coley disappeared as a sophomore. Wide receivers coach Kevin Beard worked hard with Coley in the offseason to help get him back on track.

While Duke Johnson’s loss hurts, there are a couple of backs that have the potential to make up that lost production. Gus Edwards averaged better than five yards per carry and scored 11 touchdowns on 127 carries through his first two season, and Joseph Yearby ran for 509 yards on better than five yards per carry as Johnson’s backup last season. They should form a nice committee out of the backfield.

Team Weaknesses

The defensive line has been an issue for the Hurricanes for years, which has resulted in issues against the run and getting to opposing quarterbacks. There’s a lot of talent on the roster, but sorting through that raw talent and building a solid defensive line will take some work.

The offense did a much better job of moving the ball a year ago than they did finding the end zone. That inability to finish drives really hurt the team a year ago. Miami ranked fourth in the ACC in total yards, but finished ninth in total scoring in 2014. Now that group has to replace the likes of Duke Johnson, Clive Walford, and Phillip Dorsett.

2015 Miami Hurricanes Prediction: 7-5

The annual game against Florida State hasn’t been kind to the Hurricanes in recent years, and now they’ll have to go out to Tallahassee. Luckily the schedule starts out with a pair of easy games to get the ball rolling with Bethune-Cookman and a road date with Florida Atlantic looking like a 2-0 start.

Things pick up from there with Nebraska, and trips to Cincinnati and Florida State following. The team plays three out of four at home from there, as the schedule closes out in a relatively favorable manner. That Nebraska game will be key as the coaching staff won’t want their squad going into the break coming off a loss after two easy victories. A 4-0 start isn’t out of the question.
