2010 NCAA football season picks – Mid-American Conference

The next stop in our conference preview package for 2010 NCAA football: the Mid-American Conference.

The MAC struggles to yield powerhouse schools because of its parity – but that same parity can make it entertaining to watch at times.

Let’s preview both divisions.

MAC EAST DIVISION

1. Temple (Odds To Win BCS +5000)
2. Miami (OH) (Odds To Win BCS +5000)
3. Bowling Green (Odds To Win BCS +5000)
4. Ohio
5. Kent State
6. Buffalo
7. Akron

The Temple Owls aren’t a perfect team but they do a few things very well. They’re the MAC’s rushing powerhouse. Bernard Pierce missed time with a shoulder injury but still led the conference with 1,361 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. Temple also had the top run defense against the MAC last year. Their pass “D” was woeful and Chester Stewart is a shaky quarterback but I think Temple can force opponents to play their kind of game.

Miami may seem like a strange pick to place second after it went 1-11 last year. But the Redhawks return 19 of their 22 starters. Experience can’t be underestimated in college football. I think Miami can make huge strides in the mediocre MAC this year.

Bowling Green may get more betting support but it needs to reload after losing its two most important players: quarterback Tyler Sheehan and wideout Freddie Barnes, who caught an absurd 155 passes for 1,770 yard and 19 scores last year.

Of the remaining East teams, Ohio probably has the most upside. It has plenty of holes but also plenty of promising guys, especially on the D-line.

MAC WEST DIVISION

1. Northern Illinois (Odds To Win BCS +5000)
2. Toledo (Odds To Win BCS +5000)
3. Ball State (Odds To Win BCS +5000)
4. Western Michigan
5. Central Michigan
6. Eastern Michigan

Look for 2010 to be a breakout season for Northern Illinois. Chandler Harnish now enters his third season as the starting quarterback and could explode into relevancy on a team that returns all its high-impact starters. Chad Spann, a senior, is a real playmaker in the backfield. He amassed 20 total TDs last year.

Toledo could be the MAC’s best offensive team. Austin Dantin is the freshly anointed starting quarterback and he could flourish after completing over 66 per cent of his passes in three starts last season. He has good weapons around him, especially Eric Page at receiver. But Toledo’s defense is a train wreck. It allowed 37.7 points per game last year.

Ball State could still be a factor in the West since it returns 11 starters. It’s an unspectacular team that plays average defense but it does have one of the conference’s top runners in MiQuale Lewis.

There’s a major dropoff after Ball State. Central Michigan will crash and burn without Dan LeFevour playing hero and the other two Michigan schools are too inexperienced and/or just plain bad.

MAC EAST CHAMPION: Temple. It can ride its rushing attack to victory.

MAC WEST CHAMPION: Northern Illinois. It has a few major offensive talents and can exploit Toledo’s porous defense.

MAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Northern Illinois 27, Temple 24
