Finally College Football season is upon us and we are blessed to have many great week 1 contests.  Some teams will prove their mettle and others will instantly fall to pretender status.  For the sports “investors” out there there are sure to be some opportunities to take advantage of some early lines while the oddsmakers are focused on NFL kickoff next week. (home team lines).

Here are some games that caught my eye.

Minnesota @ Middle Tennessee State (line range -2.5 to -4.5)

Big Ten teams are supposed to be favoured when they play non BCS foes, right.  This is a rare case of a midwestern, corn fed squad actually venturing down south which is a bit of a surprise but the line shouldn’t be.  That line is legit, MTSU is the likely Sun Belt Champ and coming off 10 win season.  There is a chance the Blue Raiders embarrass the gophers.

Note:  There are questions surrounding MTSU QB Dwight Dasher.  If he doesn’t play all bets are off.

Pittsbugh @ Utah (line range -2 to -3)

Neither of these teams are BCS championship contenders but they could win their respective conferences.  This should be a hard fought game that will likely end with the last possession.  The line seems pretty fair to me.

USC @ Hawaii (line range +19 to +21)

Everyone is curious about USC this year, how will they play after being punished so harshly by the NCAA.  Hawaii is unlikely to be the stiffest test but I think USC will use this game as a statement they are still among elite (I know I think they are).  I think they will cruise to an ATS win here something like 49-10.

Northwestern @ Vanderbilt (+3 to +4)

Maybe we could call this the Brainiac Bowl.  Neither team is expected of much this year especially Vandy.  NW is solidly mid-tier Big Ten and a win here really improves their bowl chances.  They will be breaking in a new QB on the road against the SEC.  Not a great formula.

Connecticut @ Michigan (-2.5 to -3)

A lot of eyes on this one as many are looking to see if Big Blue has turned the corner.  Connecticut may not be the most talented team in the country but they don’t lie down for anybody forcing Michigan to win it…if they can.  I like UConn as an upset special.

Washington @ BYU (-3 across the board)

A good early test for both squads.  Which ever team wins will prove they are a good team to be taken seriously in their conference. Whoever loses might not be as good as everyone thought and heading for a down year against a tough schedule.

Oregon State vs. TCU (-13 across the board)

This one might be closer than expected as the Beavers certainly have the talent to test the TCU defense.  What does it mean if TCU blows them out or loses?  Love these early season make or break games.  I will be watching but will pass on the wager.

LSU @ North Carolina (+1 to +1.5)

For a team with a couple of recent national championships LSU sure is an afterthought this season.  I guess that is what inconsistent QB play will do to you.  That is UNC’s problem too but their defense is so good it is likely to pitch a few shutouts…if everyone stays eligible.  There is a lot swirling in Chapel Hill these days.

Navy @ Maryland (+6.5 to +7.5)

I know Maryland isn’t very good but I love the respect for the Naval Academy.  Its week 1 and they are on the road against a desperate BCS sqaud and they still draw a TD advantage.  They will probably win by 3 TDs.

Boise State vs Virginia Tech (+2.5 across the board)

Again another respect game given Boise is favoured in VT’s backyard.  The Broncos are surely very good but it is different putting them into a BCS game after a perfect season as opposed to assuming they will be perfect by ranking them in the top 5.  The Hokies are no pushovers.  I am going to watch this spread until just before kickoff then make up my mind.

Good luck with your college football picks. I’m really liking the value coming in on FAU at +15 Thursday night. This number just keeps going I’m and I’m loving it.
