The opening of conference schedules led to some major drama for some of the nation’s top teams, but the elite squads were able to escape with victories, though there was still some re-shuffling throughout the top 25 teams.

The top seven remain unchanged, but LSU’s loss knocked it out of the 10, allowing idle Notre Dame to move up a spot, while Michigan State re-entered the top 10, leapfrogging Ole Miss into the No. 9 spot.

LSU tumbled all the way down to No. 17. The biggest move of the week came from the team that beat that, as Mississippi State enters the poll at No. 14. A slew of consecutive impressive showings also helped East Carolina into the top 25. They debut at No. 23.

1. Florida State Seminoles (3-0, previous: 1)

Clemson really gave Florida State a run for its money in Saturday’s game in Tallahassee, forcing overtime and nearly coming away victorious. The absence of Jameis Winston was enough for voters to overlook that performance and keep the Seminoels at No. 1. Next up is a date with N.C. State.

2. Oregon Ducks (4-0, previous 2)

Oregon certainly had its fair share of trouble against a bad Washington State team, but the Ducks were able to escape with a win. Next up is a game against an Arizona team that is flying high after a win over Cal on a Hail Mary.

3. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0, previous: 3)

Alabama was slow out of the gate but did eventually assert its strength and pull away from Florida. The Gators really shot themselves in the foot in that one, but a road contest against Ole Miss in a week’s time is one the Tide can’t afford to fool around in.

4. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0, previous: 4)

Oklahoma allowed West Virginia to hang around for a good long while in Saturday’s contest, but did come away with a double-digit victory, covering the spread for backers. They’re off this week before returning to take on TCU.

5. Auburn Tigers (3-0, previous: 5)

That Kansas State game was positioned in a way that the team really needed to make a statement but they didn’t quite do it. Manhattan is a tough place to play, so maybe we can look beyond that one. The Tigers’ schedule is about to get ridiculously tough following this weekend’s game against Louisiana Tech.

6. Texas A&M Aggies (4-0, previous: 6)

The Aggies routed SMU over the weekend and draw Arkansas on Saturday, but then things get real tough with three consecutive games against top SEC West opponents. That’s when we’ll know what this team really is.

7. Baylor Bears (3-0, previous: 7)

The Bears enjoyed an off week which helped the team to heal some early wounds, particularly quarterback Bryce Petty. Now they return to a road contest against Iowa State.

8. Notre Dame (3-0, previous: 9)

The Irish are woefully overseeded at No. 8. They were off last week, and now come back to take on Syracuse on the road in a game they shouldn’t have any trouble with, assuming quarterback Everett Golson continues to shoulder the offensive load.

9. Michigan State (2-1, previous: 11)

Michigan State routed Eastern Michigan a week ago and should do the same against Wyoming in East Lansing this weekend. With a loss already on their schedule they need to keep winning by wide margins.

10. Ole Miss Rebels (3-0, previous: 10)

Ole Miss was on a bye this past Saturday, and they return to a favorable matchup against Memphis. After that one, things get really tough with four of the next five games coming against elite SEC opponents.
