Coach: Paul Johnson
2008 Record: 9-4

Johnson brought his triple-option offense that’s worked so well at Georgia Southern and Navy to Tech last year, and guess what? It worked there too.

Using all the elements of the spread offense except running it under center rather than the shotgun, Johnson took a backup QB (Josh Nesbitt) and turned him into a solid option pivot; running back Jonathan Dwyer had a 2008 anyone would have been proud of. If the stars align and the strategy continues to work, the Yellow Jackets can contend for the ACC title in 2009.Johnson focuses on running the ball and stopping the run – as can be seen from 2008’s statistics.

While Nesbitt only racked up about 800 yards passing, he also ran the ball for 700 yards and seven majors. Dwyer finished just shy of 1,400 yards with 12 TDs. While junior wideout Demaryius Thomas snagged 39 balls for 627 yards, no other receiver had more than eight receptions.

Junior safety Morgan Burnett racked up 93 tackles and end Derrick Morgan chipped in with seven sacks. While Tech will have a re-built D-line this season, the entire starting back seven returns.

Team Strengths
The triple-option spread offense. The scheme relies heavily on misdirection, and Tech’s passers, though not prototypical drop-back types, offer more chances to throw than Georgia Southern or Navy’s crop did. The Jackets should again pile up yards on the ground, especially with only one new face on the offensive line.

As mentioned, Burnett flies around the field to make stops; he also had seven interceptions last year. Not too shabby.

Team Weaknesses
The defensive line is a major question mark. Morgan can get to the QB, but if he’s double-teamed the other new guys will have to step up. Massive redshirt frosh T.J. Barnes (6”7, 325) has the inside track at a starting job and watch to see if sophomore end Jason Peters contributes. The one new O-line starter, right tackle Austin Barrack, is tiny (6”3, 254). That can work at the Naval Academy – we’ll see if he can block ACC ends.

Tech has the most returning starters in the conference (18) and it’s fair to say that Johnson no longer has any doubters.

With continued improvement from Nesbitt, another year of Dwyer and a slick defensive back seven, Georgia Tech should be in the thick of the ACC hunt.

2009 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Record Prediction: 10-3

I agree that the real weakness for this team will be on the defensive side of the ball. I have littte doubt their offense will put points on the board, but I question if they will be able to stop some of the better offenses they will face in the ACC

You are going to see smaller offensive linemen at GT moving forward. Smaller quicker linemen are integral to an effective spread option, as less emphasis is put on stand up pass protection and instead you need for effective cut blocking. Big men as a rule don’t get down as quick.
