For the many, many years when Virginia Tech under legendary head coach Frank Beamer was an elite program not just in the ACC, but in the country, this rivalry game was a mismatch.

Yet, it’s a lean year in Blacksburg, with the Hokies stumbling through a 5-6 campaign. Could make things interesting with Virginia coming to town.

The lone bright spot for Virginia Tech this season was its Week 2 upset over Ohio State. The shine has long worn off that accomplishment, largely thanks to Tech’s 2-5 record against fellow ACC teams.

A win against their in-state foe wouldn’t cure everything, but it would be some nice consolation.

Cavaliers’ head coach Mike London has been on the hot seat from the outset and a 5-6 record and 3-4 ACC mark won’t make the critics any quieter. Virginia’s AD Craig Littlepage just announced that London will return for the 2015 season, but he’ll have to make tangible improvement next year.

The strange thing is, Virginia regularly reels in some top recruits in the country. One of these years, you’d anticipate that would show up in the win column.

Clearly, it’s a lean time for college football in the state of Virginia. In nearby West Virginia, Marshall is having an undefeated campaign and West Virginia has pulled some upsets in the Big 12; that probably won’t make any Virginians feel any better.

The Cavs are coming off a nice 30-13 win over Miami, which will perk their fans up a little after four straight losses before that. If Virginia’s defense can again find its form like it did versus the Hurricanes, the Cavaliers stand a good chance of coming into Blacksburg and taking a victory.

The Hokies, meanwhile, just lost a 6-3, two-OT game against Wake Forest. I’ll give you some time to stifle your laughter.

Tech’s defense is really good (18th-ranked nationally) but the home team will need a considerably more effective offensive showing and a strong game from QB Michael Brewer if the Hokies are to win this Friday.

A battle against two 5-6 ballclubs isn’t about to blow up any TV ratings, but the game still represents plenty symbolically for these two struggling teams. I like Virginia’s chance to keep the momentum from the Miami game going, and cool down London’s hot seat a little bit.
