Week 4: Utes vs Wolverines Picks

NCAA Football Week 4 Betting action sees the Utah Utes taking on the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, September 20th at Michigan Stadium. Cappers Picks provides free college football handicapping tips all season long.

The Wolverines looked totally miserable when being shut out by rival Notre Dame in Week 2 in South Bend, but they rebounded nicely with a 34-10 victory over Miami of Ohio last week. The Maize and Blue now must take care of business with Utah making the trip east.

As pathetic as Michigan looked in the game against the Irish, the Wolverines have some intriguing weapons that make them – at least hypothetically – a dangerous team. Massive WR/TE Devin Funchess is a beast, and I think Michigan still doesn’t utilize him as much as it should.

Funchess creates match-up problems for virtually any linebacker or DB, thanks to his size (6″5, 230 lbs) and athleticism to get down the seam or create separation out wide.

Under center, senior Devin Gardner at least provides experience and fleet-footedness. There’s also sophomore RB Derrick Green, who is a bowling ball (5″11, 227 lbs) with explosiveness, as evidenced by his 137 rushing yards and two TDs against the Miami Redhawks.

The defense is led by superb LBs Jake Ryan and Frank Clark, so why did the Wolverines lay such an egg against Notre Dame?

It’s a good question and one the hordes of fans at the Big House hope will translate into sharpened focus for UM for the duration of this season, in a down year in their conference.

For Utah’s part, the squad has been dropping points all over Idaho State and Fresno State in the first couple of weeks. Ryan, Clark et al. will be kept busy because the Utes rank near the Top 25 in both rushing and passing offense.

Massive junior QB Travis Wilson has been ruthlessly efficient thus far, chucking for 446 yards and six majors to go with no interceptions.

Utah’s balanced attack should put the focus back on the Michigan “D”, as the 31 points the Irish dropped on them is surely still on everyone’s mind.

Even if Michigan’s defense doesn’t deliver an “A+” performance, if the Wolverines slam the ball with Green to set up mismatches with Funchess (who’s been good enough to earn the #1 jersey, worn by NFLers David Terrell, Braylon Edwards and others) they should be in good stead.

Utah’s attack is prolific enough that the home team cannot be napping at any point in this game.

4* Play: Score Prediction – Michigan 27, Utah 24

If some of Michigan’s highly-touted athletes on defense can force Wilson into a rare turnover, they’ll feel a lot better about maintaining control in this important non-conference game.
