The classic in-state battle within the Hoosier State (which doesn’t include Indiana University, oddly) pits Purdue versus iconic Notre Dame at neutral site Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, home to the NFL’s Colts.

The Fighting Irish looked awfully good in their Week 2 dismantling of the Michigan Wolverines, where they shut out the Maize and Blue for the first time in the history of the (now defunct, thanks to Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick) storied rivalry.

Not only did the offense look functional back under the stewardship of veteran QB Everett Golson, the defense was lights-out against Michigan.

Sophomore LB Jaylon Smith was all over the field in South Bend last week, and Smith should be especially jacked up as he’s a Fort Wayne native.

The Irish defensive line swallowed up Michigan’s run game, and the secondary made plays sideline to sideline.

If Notre Dame keeps up that level of performance, not only is Purdue in dire straits this weekend, but the Irish could make a tangible push for the BCS postseason in its first year of existence.

There’s also a measure of finality to this weekend’s match-up, as Purdue and Notre Dame won’t meet for six years after the upcoming game. Swarbrick is really shaking up the annual calendar.

In order to have a fighting chance, the Boilermakers must get steady play from whoever starts under center.

College football betting trends

  • PUR are 1-10 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
  • PUR are 4-10-1 ATS in their last 15 games overall.

Purdue hasn’t decided whether it will go with Danny Etling – who got yanked in last week’s loss to Central Michigan – or Austin Appleby, another sophomore whose play hasn’t been inspired.

It’s not a great problem to have for the Boilers.
