The interest and excitement surrounding this year’s National Championship game could not be at a higher zenith, thanks to the Ducks snapping Florida State’s 29-game win streak and Ohio State upsetting Alabama, the top-ranked team and an SEC superpower.

It should be a fun one in the House that Jerry Built (AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys).

There’s enough interesting narrative in this match-up to make a sports talk radio host’s head spin.

The Ducks looked amazing against the Seminoles in the Rose Bowl this week, nearly beating them by 40 points and, in doing so, dashing FSU’s hopes of repeating as National Champs.

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is confirming voters’ picks for the Heisman Trophy this season, as he dismantled fellow Heisman candidate Jameis Winston with ease. Perhaps NFL scouts have their knocks on him, but Mariota brings a combination of athleticism and poise that has thoroughly captured college football.

Incredibly, Ohio State’s path here is an even more compelling storyline. The Buckeyes, ranked fourth in the nation and a team that had its validity questioned with Baylor and TCU on deck, pulled a huge upset on coach Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide.

Alabama has won three National Titles in the past five seasons; the Tide contends literally every season.

The SEC has been recognized as the nation’s supreme conference for a long time and not many people gave Ohio State a chance to win – OSU was more than a touchdown underdog going into the Sugar Bowl.

Ohio State also grabbed the victory rolling out its third-string QB. Cardale Jones was making just his second career start and while he wasn’t perfect, he did enough to beat the Big, Bad Wolf that is the SEC’s representative.

Buckeyes RB Ezekiel Elliott looked like a world-beater in New Orleans this week; if he duplicates his 200+ yard performance, Oregon’s defense will struggle.

That has been irrelevant this year, mostly, due to Oregon’s explosive offense with Mariota at the controls.

I think Oregon is the deserving favorite in this match-up, not because the Buckeyes don’t have the talent to win this game, but because in beating Alabama this week, Ohio State may have won its championship.

The Buckeyes were 0-10 against SEC opponents (thanks to a vacated win versus Arkansas in 2011) and Ohio State have been especially snakebitten by elite SEC West squads like ‘Bama and LSU.

This Sugar Bowl victory was a massive statement for head coach Urban Meyer, the program and the entire Big Ten Conference. Consequently, the Buckeyes might (even subconsciously) feel like they’ve already slayed the dragon.

The problem being that the dragon remaining is a slick athlete with a Heisman Trophy to his name, guiding a team with a high-speed offensive juggernaut built by current Philadelphia Eagles head man Chip Kelly.

Oregon 38, Ohio State 24

Ohio State has already accomplished much, but I like Oregon to emerge victorious in north Texas on Jan. 12.
