Entering this contest, both programs are coming off drastically different showings. Oklahoma State took down Iowa State 37-20 while the Jayhawks fell to West Virginia 33-14.

Oklahoma State

Through five games this season, the Cowboys have turned their offensive production into 39.2 points per game — the 23rd-best mark in the nation. The team has been able to rush the ball for 163.2 yards per game (74th in the nation), but through the air is where it’s doing the most damage, as it’s 286.6 yards per contest (31st).

Defensively, Oklahoma State is just 69th in the nation in terms of points per game allowed, but the mark of 25.6 is respectful.

Against Kansas, the Cowboys will hone in on rush defense. OSU is 29th in rush defense, which is good because the Jayhawks aren’t going to focus on the pass attack in this one.

The Cowboys have the clear edge here, especially considering Kansas is just 124th in point per game scored.

Kansas

Kansas is just 115th in the nation in passing yards accumulated per game. Although their ranking of 70th in rushing is better, it’s not going to scare a team of OSU’s caliber at this juncture.

Against the Cowboys, Kansas will have to focus on defending the pass. Luckily for the Jayhawks, their pass defense is better than their rush defense, as the two categories are ranked 66th and 91st in the nation, respectively.

While the point here is to look ahead, we can’t help but look in the past when it comes to Kansas. This team has lost 15 straight games to ranked opponents, and chances are, No. 16 is right around the corner.

In all likelihood, Kansas gets that 16th straight loss to a ranked opponent on Saturday. The odds of winning are not in their favor, and it would be a “Week 6 worthy” upset if we see OSU fall even on the road.

The question is: Can the Cowboys cover the spread?

Against Kansas, the answer should be yes. The Jayhawks are losing to opponents by an average margin of 12 points per contest, but following last week’s 19-point loss to unranked West Virginia, it’s easy to see how the Cowboys could do some serious damage.
