Both teams enter this contest coming off wins, but in very different fashions. Stanford took down Washington State 34-17 on Friday, Oct. 10, while ASU barely snuck out a win against ranked USC 38-34.

Stanford

The Stanford Cardinal found  a way to win back momentum after the defeat against the Notre Dame fighting Irish win a win against the WSU Cougars last week. Their 17-point win was barely a win ATS, as they were 16.5-point favorites entering the contest, but it was a win nonetheless.

Stanford is 4-2 on the year, and while that’s hardly a bad record, it’s a bit of a surprising one considering how elite this program has been the past handful of years. The team is 89th in the nation in points per game at 26.3 per contest, but it’s first in points allowed, giving up an average of just 10 points each week.

On the season, the Cardinal rank second in the nation in total defense, allowing just 238 yards per game, and that will be the selling point if you’re looking for a Stanford win either straight up or against the spread. Arizona State is far superior on offense, but it’s struggled defensively through the first seven weeks.

Arizona State

On the year, ASU is giving up 31.4 points per contest. That number is only good enough for 92nd in the nation, but the offense is what’s led to a 5-1 record.

So far this season, the Sun Devils are ninth in the nation in passing yards (340.4 per game), 29th in rushing yards (216.4 per game) and 14th in points per game (41.2).

The question here is whether or not Arizona State’s offense can outlast Stanford’s defense. The team is seventh in the country in total offense, and they have momentum coming off a win, and more specifically, they have rest coming off a bye.

Week 8 NCAA Football

The last time Stanford and Arizona State faced off, the Cardinal showed that they were the more dominant team from the start. They won 38-14 en route to the Pac-12 Championship, but will that success translate to 2014?

Free NCAA Betting Pick 4* Stanford -3.5

Although there are plenty of reasons to bet on Arizona State, the spread is small enough that Stanford earns the nod in Cappers Picks’ eyes. Look for Stanford to pull out a win straight up, and with a field goal as the difference in the spread, a win ATS isn’t outside the realm of possibility.
