Pac 12 Week 8: Bruins vs. Wildcats Preview & Prediction

UCLA Trojans vs Arizona Wildcats NCAA Football Odds

Arizona, fresh off of firing their head coach are set to take the field against the UCLA Bruins on Thursday night, and the Wildcats are the favorites in this one.

Bruins v Wildcats
When: Thursday, 9:00 PM EST
Where: Arizona Stadium, Tucson, Arizona
TV: ESPN, ESPN 3
LINE: -4 Arizona
Over/Under: 61.5

Yes, the 1-5 Arizona Wildcats are a four-point favorite in this match-up with UCLA. I little farfetched if you look at this one a little closer though.

Arizona fields a very talented unit, especially on the offensive side of the ball. This group is led of course by senior quarterback Nick Foles. It truly is a shame how his senior year has turned out. He is having the best season of his college career, but it just hasn’t translated to wins so far.

If you’re looking for a reason, look no further than the defense. They are giving up 37.5 points on average this year, barely good enough for 117th in the nation. This has just been a flat out awful unit all year long, and they haven’t given Foles any help at all. Speaking of not giving Foles any help, look no further than the Cats’ running attack. Arizona ranks 119th in rushing yards per game(71.8).

So while this team may be talented, when you take a closer look at the stats. It’s no wonder they only have one win on the season. That win was against Northern Arizona by the way, was not exactly one to hang your hat on either.

On the other side of the ball, you have a team that uses a much different approach on the offensive side of the ball. Where Arizona has a bottom 25 rushing attack, UCLA has close to a top 25 rushing game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

They have used that to propel themselves to a 3-3 record overall, including a 2-1 mark in the conference so far.

The Bruins have benefited from their Pac 12 schedule this season. They have already played two of the bottom three teams from the North, and are set to play the last of that trio in a few weeks.

Couple that with the fact that they have three teams from the South without a conference win to date, and this team is very capable of coming out of the conference with a winning record.

Don’t forget we’re talking about a team that has two losses of 25+ points.

In the three losses UCLA has this season, they have come directly due to the opposing team’s quarterback, which, as we all know, is the strength of this Arizona team. However, I just don’t know if it will be enough to overcome a very motivated UCLA squad, and a Wildcats’ defense that has been pushed around for most of the 2011 campaign..

This is a golden opportunity the Bruins have in front of them, and I don’t expect them to mess that up here in this one.

Matt’s Prediction: UCLA 30 – Arizona 27
