Texas vs UCLA Free Week 3 College Football Pick + Betting Preview

The Texas Longhorns will head west this weekend to take on UCLA bent on avenging last year’s meeting when the Bruins came into Texas and embarrassed the ‘Horns 34-12.

For the Longhorns, it was the first of seven losses on the year, while for the Bruins it was the second of a three gaming winning streak en route to losing six of their last eight to end the 2010 season.

Now both teams meet under similar situations–trying to decide on a suitable replacement for injured or underperforming starting quarterbacks.

Last week in Texas, it was another McCoy, younger brother of Colt who came to the rescue, replacing starter Garrett Gilbert who went 2 of 8 for eight yards while throwing two interceptions before the offense was handed to the sophomore and freshman quarterback David Ash in a rotation.

McCoy came in just in time to lead the winning drive in a game that had been pretty much dominated by BYU most of the first three quarters, helping Texas escape with a 17-16 win over the Cougars to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Not bad, considering the Longhorns played 18 true freshman in their opener and last week, the most ever under Mack Brown.

Nevertheless, despite McCoy’s efforts and a little luck last weekend, the team still has some real problems at QB, and mixed with the inexperience of the team as a whole, Texas fans will only have to hope for the best as the schedule heads into conference play in just two weeks. While there is plenty of talent on this Longhorn team, it may take a while to get that talent to perform up to the level they will need in order to return the ‘Horns to football prominence.

As for the Bruins, their season has been interesting to say the least, and fourth-year head coach Rick Neuheisel is on the hot seat again after being accused of botching UCLA’s quarterback situation.

After an opening day loss to Houston, the Bruins barely got by San Jose State as Neuheisel opted to play back up Richard Brehaut despite the fact that starting quarterback Kevin Prince was reportedly healthy enough after to play in Saturday’s game.

Weird decision since Neuheisel has long seemed to prefer Prince.

Will he forgot what Price did at Texas last year when making a decision on where the quarterback carousel will stop this weekend?

NCAA Gambling Trends:

TEXAS are 4-13 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
TEXAS are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games.
Under is 25-9 in UCLA last 34 home games.
Under is 18-7 in UCLA last 25 games on grass.

Matt’s Prediction: Texas 27, UCLA 24–

While UCLA is loaded with returning starters, logic would also suggest that UCLA would have a much more impressive first two games of the season. But they didn’t. Texas opened as a 3-point road favorite and has been bet up to -3.5.

I expect the betting public’s confidence is a clear indicator of how this game will finish.
