Pac 12 Week 6: Buffaloes vs Cardinal Preview & Prediction

Buffaloes vs Cardinal NCAA Football Odds

The University of Colorado Buffaloes (1-3, 0-1) are going to need a lot of luck if they want to knock of the #7 Stanford Cardinal (4-0, 2-0) in Palo Alto on Saturday. Unfortunately, they’re going to be seeing a lot of luck, Andrew Luck that is.

Buffaloes v Cardinal
Venue/Stadium: Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, CA.

Spread (ATS): Stanford -29
Over/Under: 58.5

Stanford’s phenomenal quarterback skipped the NFL draft last spring to finish out his senior year at Stanford, but he’s been playing pro-quality football all season. So far this year, he’s completed 80-112 passes for 1013 yards and 11 touchdowns.

In last week’s 49-19 blowout against UCLA, he even called his own plays in several drives and completed 23 of 27 for 225 yards. So it’s not surprising that CU head coach Jon Embree told reporters this week that he wished Luck was playing in the NFL right now.

Meanwhile, Embree and the Buffs are still reeling from back to back losses in their last two games. Two weeks ago they were beaten 37-17 against the Buckeyes in a game marked by an absolutely dreadful performance by their special teams.

Last week, they gave away a 31-27 victory to lowly Washington State in front of their home crowd. After the game, an emotional Embree asked, “When is enough, enough?” in a fiery post game news conference. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

It seems unlikely that Palo Alto is going to be the place where the Buffs draw that line. They’ve dropped their last twenty road games and haven’t been on the winning side of a season since 2005.

Colorado’s banged up defense is likely to have a very tough time defending against Luck and the Cardinal offense. Stanford throws everything but the kitchen sink at opponents and isn’t shy about trotting out trick plays on a regular basis.

If there’s a bright spot for the Buffs, it’s that quarterback Tyler Hansen, despite their miserable record, is actually having a pretty good year. After starting four games, he’s completed 98 of 173 for 1325 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Colorado is going to need Hansen to be throwing the game of his life because their anemic running game stands little chance against a Stanford defense that’s only giving up an average of 36 running yards per game. The Cardinal D has struggled a little against more sophisticated offenses this year, but Colorado doesn’t fall in that category.

Stanford is 4-0 ATS and 2-2 o/u, Colorado is 2-3 ATS and 2-3 o/u.

Matt’s Prediction: Stanford 48-21-Beating Stanford would be an incredible boost to the struggling Buffaloes as they head into a tough stretch of games that includes Washington next week, followed by #9 Oregon and #22 Arizona State. But unless they can contain Luck, it’s unlikely that they’ll see their first PAC 10 win this week.
