Week 4: Hurricanes vs Cornhuskers Picks

Week 4 college betting action sees the Miami Hurricanes taking on the No. 24 Nebraska Cornhuskers down in Lincoln, Neb. Cappers Picks provides free college football handicapping tips all season long.

Entering this contest, the Nebraska Cornhuskers should have much more confidence than they had entering Week 3. They’re coming off a strong 55-19 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs, but they’ll need more than just confidence against a tough Miami Hurricanes squad.

Miami

The Miami Hurricanes have bounced back nicely following their Week 1 blunder against the Louisville Cardinals. Despite falling 31-13 in the season opener, the team has routed Florida A&M and Arkansas State to the tune of 41-7 and 41-20, respectively.

The problem is that both of those games were at home, where as the Louisville debacle took place on the road. Now the team has to travel once again, as it faces the No. 24 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.

On the year, Miami is averaging 31.7 points per game (67th) while allowing just 19.3 points per contest (35th).

Offensively, this team is producing mostly through the air. Although the 244.7 yards per game throwing is only good enough for 63rd in the nation, its 138 yards per contest on the ground barely cracks the country’s top 100, as it sits at 93rd in the nation.

Although finding a balance on offense will be important, locking in defensively will be the bigger task. Nebraska enters Week 3 as the No. 11 scoring offense in the country, and it has everything to do with the production of Ameer Abdullah.

Nebraska

Miami will look to hone in on Heisman Trophy candidate, Ameer Abdullah, on Saturday, but that’s something nobody has been able to do just yet. The tailback is averaging 6.9 yards per carry, and has scored three touchdowns to go with his 396 total yards.

Also in the running game has been quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. The sophomore has compiled 258 yards and two touchdowns on the ground to go with his 53.1 percent pass completion rate. He’s also thrown seven touchdowns to just one interception while compiling 773 yards.

At this point in the year, Nebraska is rushing for 324.3 yards per game (9th), while passing for 270 (47th). This is the reason the team is averaging 47 points per contest (11th), which is only complemented by the 16.7 points its giving up each week (20th).

NCAA Football Handicapping Trends:

  • MIA are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
  • MIA are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games in September.
  • Under is 40-15 in MIA last 55 non-conference games.

Week 4 NCAA Football

The Cornhuskers have the easy edge here when looking at the numbers, but you can’t forget strength of schedule. Remember, this is the same Huskers squad that nearly fell to FCS McNeese State in Week 2.

Although it’s clear Nebraska hasn’t been tested on a grand scale at this point, you have to look at talent on the field. Miami may have a deeper roster in certain spots, but the Cornhuskers have the best player in the contest — if not one of the best in the nation.

This one won’t be a 55-19 trouncing like we saw last week, but it should be in Nebraska’s favor when the clock strikes zero.
