Florida

In what’s been a decidedly feast-or-famine 2010 campaign for the Gators, some food on the table would be a result of pulling the upset against their hated in-state rival. Florida has had no Tim Tebow or Percy Harvin to bail them out this season; the Gators have been forced to look for production from unlikely sources.

Oft-maligned first-year starting pivot John Brantley hasn’t yet cracked 2,000 yards passing, no rusher has cracked the 500-yard barrier (though freshman QB Trey Burton has a stupid 11 TDs) and Florida’s two leading receivers – Deonte Thompson and Carl Moore – have one score apiece.

Still, with a win versus the ’Noles, UF could finish with a halfway-respectable eight-win season. Eight wins is impressive for most programs, but head coach Urban Meyer has created a football program to expect excellence. These rivalry games don’t quite have the national implications they had in the 1990s, but it would still be marvelous for UF fans to derail what has been a pretty good season in Tallahassee. If it will happen, Florida’s defense – which has been quite strong as usual – must truly show up to play in order to thwart what can be a quick-strike FSU attack.

Florida State

The glory days of FSU are long gone, but veteran QB Christian Ponder and his men have played to a tidy eight-win effort so far. Beating the loathed Gators at home would be an exclamation mark.

The Seminoles got crushed in Week 2 against Oklahoma and have had a poor showing against North Carolina teams (0-2 versus Carolina and NC State) but other than that, their season has been excellent. The “D” has played inspired football and the offense has a balanced aerial attack thanks to WRs Bert Reed and Willie Haulstead. The latter has been injured, but he’s expected to play this Saturday.

FSU must find a way to contain young gun Burton, who isn’t much of an aerial threat but is almost automatic scrambling in the red zone. Brantley has shown he can be rattled; if the ’Noles can put some pressure on him, they can probably force him into mistakes. The sum total makes it look like this is a winnable, if not likely winnable, tilt for the home side.

The Pick: All bets are off usually with this spirited rivalry game, but this year it looks like Florida has been just too scatter-brained all around to feel confident about. As recently as a couple seasons ago, you’d be vastly confident in the Gators taking this game, but that’s how quickly the landscape can change in FBS college football.

Florida vs. Florida State Score Prediction: Florida 17 Florida State 24
