South Carolina

Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier is going to really want this one against his former employer. With the way SC has played for most of the season, Florida could be ripe for the picking. True, veteran QB Stephen Garcia can’t stop throwing picks (a 9-14 ratio on the year) but perhaps SC can lean on freshman pivot Marcus Lattimore, who has proven he’s the real deal with 752 yards and 11 TDs. Freshman tailbacks have had success against the Gators in the past (think Herschel Walker) and Florida has looked vulnerable in 2010, even in The Swamp.

Florida should also have trouble defending stud WR Alshon Jeffery; though a double-team with Florida’s athletics DBs should work, the key to Carolina’s success will be the ability for someone else from its receiving corps to emerge – and the consistency with which Garcia delivers the ball. If Carolina can spread the ball around and force the Gators D to compromise, the Gamecocks have an excellent shot and being productive in Gainesville this week.

Florida

It’s been a strange, unconventional year in Gainesville this season. Urban Meyer has the rabid UF faithful believing the Gators will be a superpower every season, but they have looked eminently mortal in 2010.

Yet, in the everyone-beats-everyone SEC East, the Gators are tied with SC for tops in the division. The Gators are still enjoying a gutsy OT victory against Georgia a couple weeks ago, and they beat up on Vanderbilt last week (but who hasn’t?) so there is momentum to build off. No doubt, it says a lot about the program where three losses feels like an abject failure of a season.

Perhaps Florida should leave the big plays in the hands of scrambling freshman QB Trey Burton; he’s had big games lately, gets in the end-zone frequently and starting pivot John Brantley has looked shaky. There doesn’t need to be a lot of style points in this victory, but the Gators sorely need this win to nab the division crown and satiate the insane Gators fans that pack Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The Pick: SC’s Lattimore is a great player, but it is hard to have faith in Garcia when he has thrown so many interceptions. The home field advantage of The Swamp is always vital and it will probably come into play in this penultimate SEC East showdown. Florida seems like it has woken up from a miserable slumber and the Gators are the safe pick.

(23) South Carolina vs. (22) Florida Score Prediction: South Carolina 13 Florida 27
