Week 1: #25 Huskies vs Warriors Odds

College football Week 1 betting action sees the Washington Huskies taking on the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors  on Saturday August 29th at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. Cappers Picks provides free NCAA football handicapping tips all season long.

In Chris Peterson’s first game as head coach of the Huskies, the team heads to the Aloha State to take on Norm Chow’s Warriors. While Peterson is trying to start his era off with a big win, Chow is looking for a big win of his own to help ease the painful offseason for the Hawaiian squad.

With both Washington and Hawaii featuring new quarterbacks in 2014, things could get interesting. If history repeats itself, both offenses will continue to thrive on the pass game as they did last season. The Peterson era begins with some huge changes for Washington while Chow is fighting to keep his program intact.

Washington

There were some big changes at Washington this offseason. The Huskies were able to lure the highly sought after Chris Peterson from Boise State after Steve Sarkisian bolted for his dream job at USC. And the team lost top talent in Keith Price, Bishop Sankey, Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Sean Parker.

Leave it to Peterson to turn a short amount of time to recruit into a class that has earned a preseason ranking despite the key losses. Jeff Lindquist has been tabbed as the starter for the opener – his first collegiate start.

A local hero, Lindquist is starting in lieu of the 1 game suspension to Cyler Miles and beating out Troy Williams in camp for the starting honors.

At RB, Dwayne Washington and Lavon Coleman are slated to take over the bulk of the carries. Marvin Hall, Jaydon Mickens and DiAndre Campbell are getting the start over star Kasen Williams and John Ross who had a breakout year in 2013.

On a very young and inexperience defense, Freshman Budda Baker was tabbed as the starting safety alongside sophomore Brandon Beaver while on the line, Colin Tanigawa has taken over the center position from Mike Criste despite not taking a single snap at center in a game.

Hawaii

Since Norm Chow has taken over the Warriors, the team has gone 4-20. This offseason, news broke that the school was considering dropping the football program. The team took another blow when one of its players was tragically lost in a water accident. The team would like to look past all that with a huge upset victory to kick the season off.

Starting at QB is Ohio State transfer Taylor Graham, who went 46-100 with 462 yards, 2 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. A big bright spot on offense is the return of last season’s leader rusher Joey Iosefa who had 590 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground as well as 87 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Also returning is last year’s #2 receiver in Scott Harding, who is going to have to step up with the loss of Chris Gant. In 2013, Harding had 56 receptions for 631 yards and 1 touchdown.

If this year’s defense is anything like last season’s, that high powered offense is going to have to aim very high. The least amount of points Hawaii gave up last season was 28, while they allowed more than 40 points in five different games.

NCAA football handicapping trends

  • Over is 4-0 in Huskies last 4 road games
  •  Huskies are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games
  • Over is 8-1 in Rainbow Warriors last 9 games overall
  • Over is 4-1 in Rainbow Warriors last 5 home games
  • Hawaii is 1-5 SU in its last 6 games at home

Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction

While both defenses are primed to give up a lot of points through the air, the Huskies have a much more talented defense capable of making much needed stops. Despite those facts, Washington leaves Hawaii with an easy victory.
