Free Pick: #7 Michigan State vs. #3 Oregon Betting Odds & Preview

Week 2: #7 Spartans vs #3 Ducks Odds

College football Week 2 betting action sees the Michigan State Spartans taking on the Oregon Ducks on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore. Cappers Picks provides free NCAA football handicapping tips all season long.

With ESPN College GameDay making its way to Eugene, you know that this is going to be one of the marquee matchups of the early season. Oregon is favored, but what a lot of people aren’t talking about is the Spartans’ offense — an offense that will be going up against a defense that, while still efficient, looked a bit sloppy in Week 1.

Michigan State

Michigan State is the No. 7 team in the country for a reason. This is a group that has become known for its defensive prowess throughout the years, but it’s also finding a balance on offense that is leading to a lot of success.

In Week 1, Michigan State took on Jacksonville State —  a team it was supposed to beat. The level of competition wasn’t impressive, but the numbers the Spartans put up was.

Against Jacksonville State, Spartty scored 45 points, which was good enough for 25th in the nation. To add insult to injury, the Spartans collected 354 yards through the air — the 20th-best mark in the nation.

Defensively, this team did exactly what it was supposed to do. It held Jacksonville State to just seven points on the night, which was good enough for 10th in the entire country.

The only problem with these numbers? They came against inferior competition.

The Oregon Ducks are going to put up more than seven points — a whole lot more, most likely — and chances are, Michigan State will need those 45 points once again if it hopes to knock off a playoff contender in Week 2.

Oregon

Like the Spartans, the Oregon Ducks put up an impressive offensive performance in Week 1 of the 2014 college football season. They scored 62 points, which was good enough for third in the country, and they did it while collecting 293 yards on the ground (20th in the nation) and 380 yards passing (13th in the nation).

Also like Michigan State, Oregon did it all against inferior competition. The Ducks faced off against South Dakota, and they only gave up 13 points in the process.

The fear here for Oregon is that it hasn’t played well against bigger defensive-minded programs in the recent past. Remember the Rose Bowl against Ohio State? How about the National Championship against Auburn?

And who could forget the eggs it laid against Boise State and LSU in their respective season-openers?

This is a program that hasn’t played well against bigger non-conference opponents in the past, but this is also a different program under a new head coach with different players. The Ducks will put up a fight against Michigan State, and they’ll do it in one of the toughest venues for opponents in all of college football.

Week 2 NCAA Football Prediction

The Ducks are the favorites in this one, and rightfully so; however, don’t count out Sparty. The Spartans will keep this one close, and even if they can’t pull off the upset win, they’ll challenge the spread when the clock strikes zero.
