The Auburn Tigers are coming off a disappointing season that concluded with a national title game loss, and will be tested early in a tough SEC college football matchup against visiting Southeastern Conference-rival Arkansas on Saturday.

Auburn

The Tigers (2013: 12-2) surprised everyone last season as they cruised all the way to the National Championship before coming up short. However, second-year coach Gus Malzahn now has the experience and the players to make another run at a national title in 2015.

With a duo of quarterbacks that includes 6-foot-5 sophomore Jeremy Johnson and dual threat Nick Marshall, the Tigers appear to have the right combination, and a formula they hope works again this season.

But Auburn’s offensive prowess doesn’t end with its quarterback tandem, it is complimented by its dominate rushing attack that lead the nation (328.3 yards per contest) and was led by Heisman Trophy finalist Tre Mason who has moved on to the NFL.

However, Cameron Artis-Payne and Corey Grant will be more than enough to carry load.

Defensively, the Tigers weren’t great last year, but should be better with several returning players.

Arkansas

The Razorbacks (2013: 3-9) enter the 2014 season, looking to recover from losing its final nine games last season.

First-year coach Bret Bielema has given the nod to junior quarterback Brandon Allen who completed 49.6 percent of his passes last season.

With a mediocre passing game, Arkansas will need to rely heavily on its trio of running backs, which include Alex Collins, Jonathan Williams and speedster Korliss Marshall .

Defensively, the Razorbacks return just four starters and will hope that new defensive coordinator Robb Smith can build on a defensive line anchored by Trey Flowers, and fix a secondary that was downright awful last season.

College football betting trends

  • ARK are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 road games.
  • ARK are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games on grass.
  • Over is 15-5-1 in ARK last 21 road games.
  • AUB are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 conference games.
  • AUB are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games on grass.
  • AUB are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games overall.

The Razorbacks have won three of four at Jordan-Hare Stadium, but lost to Auburn 35-17 last November.

If Arkansas wants any chance at beating the Tigers, they will need to chew up both yards and the clock in an attempt to keep Auburn’s offense on the sideline. However, I just don’t see that happening here.
