Florida State Seminoles 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-16 Football Previews – (ACC) – Seminoles

The Florida State Seminoles have it going right now — maybe, if they could just stay off the police blotter.

After winning a national title, they participated in the first-ever College Football Playoffs as well last season, losing to Oregon. Those two results were led by Jameis Winston, who is now slinging it in the NFL, so it was going to be a challenge to compete at the same level even if they weren’t making so many off-the field headlines.

This season may be a true test of whether they really are back to the program that ripped off top 4 finishes for 11 years, I think. Maybe not — but not that far off.

For the first time in a few seasons, FSU is not the favourite coming into the season in the ACC (see Clemson). They think they have found a replacement for Winston in the form of Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson, who will provide more of a running threat, but has never been the most efficient passer in the pocket.

They have been recruiting at a high enough level to not expect too much of a dropoff, but another trip to the playoffs seems unlikely. They are just replacing too much in too many key areas.

Team Strengths

There are seven starters returning on the defense compared to only four on offense, so they are going to need those guys to perform at a high level. CB Jalen Ramsey may be the best at his position anywhere in America, and he is big enough to make plays all over the field. He leads a secondary which is probably the best unit on the team.

On offense RB Dalvin Cook exploded late in his freshman season, showing a toughness to go with the speed. He has been among those getting in trouble and they need him on the field to have any sense of continuity on offense this year.

Team Weaknesses

That is in part because only one of five offensive linemen returns. They might have underperformed last year, but continuity in this area is key. Of course, the replacements are highly touted, but they haven’t proven themselves yet.

Last year, Winston might’ve put the team in a hole from time to time, but he was also expert at digging them out. Golson may not be the same kind of player and there are even rumours that Sean Maguire, who has been in the program longer, might get the nod. That kind of uncertainty is new for this group.

Also, what happened to this defense leading the nation in sacks (or coming close to it). Last year the sack leader was departed Eddie Goldman, with only 4. They need to start getting after guys again.

2015-16 Florida State Seminoles Prediction: 9-3

It shows you how good things have been lately that 9-3 is a huge comedown. This will be a good team, and the ACC is not overly tough, but the Seminoles will struggle in their road tilts at Clemson, at Georgia Tech and at Florida to close the season.

That loss to Clemson is probably the one that keeps them from returning to the ACC title game.

I think the biggest things that we will notice is that FSU has a slimmer margin for error this season, and I don’t expect too many 45-3 kind of games when they play the lesser teams in conference — they will be more like 35-20. My hope is that the markets might be a little slow playing the brand name as much as the current iteration.
