5 NCAA Football Teams to Avoid When Betting on BCS Futures Odds

Don’t believe the college football betting hype

The college football season is approaching fast and the time is running out for bettors looking to get in on the offseason futures action. One of the toughest tasks facing bettors is figuring out which teams offer value, and which are overhyped.

Here are five teams bettors will want to avoid when betting college football futures:

Ohio State Buckeyes

Odds
Big Ten East: -300
Big Ten: -105
National Championship: +1200

The Buckeyes have been considered a national title contender ever since Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus. Going 24-0 in their first 24 games didn’t hurt that talk either.

However, the public has been quick to overlook the team’s schedule, which was soft to say the least, helping to fuel that record. The team showed some warts in losing their final two games of the 2013 season, and while quarterback Braxton Miller will be back under center in 2014, the team’s running back corps, which has been a strength each of the last two seasons, is a question mark.

Auburn Tigers

Odds
SEC West: +325
SEC: +450
National Championship: +1400

The Tigers embarked on an historic run last season, getting past Georgia with a late Hail Mary, downing Alabama in the Iron Bowl on a last-second miracle return, and then beating Missouri in a thriller in the SEC title game.

Auburn won’t catch anyone off guard this season, and with quarterback Nick Marshall already enduring some problems in the offseason, it doesn’t look like the Tigers will have luck on their side this season.

UCLA Bruins

Odds
Pac-12 South: +150
Pac-12: +250
National Championship: +1600

The Bruins have been a popular dark horse among pundits this summer, with one even so far as to label them the No. 1 team in the country.

Bringing quarterback Brett Hundley back is a big deal, but it’s tough to imagine the team taking the quantum leap many expect. Jim Mora has helped moved the program in the right direction, but there’s still a lot of work to do to put the team into national title contention. There’s also the inevitable tough matchup in the Pac-12 title game against either Oregon or Stanford, and Arizona State, Arizona, and USC are hardly pushovers.

Baylor Bears

Odds
Big 12: +250
National Championship: +2800

The Bears won their first Big 12 title a year ago, and now many expect them to take the next step, particularly with quarterback Bryce Petty back and looking like a true Heisman-candidate.

That’s all well and good, but the Bears played above themselves a year ago, and some fortunate circumstances helped them to that title, yet even that wasn’t enough to get the team into the national top four. Now, the class of the conference will be a strong Oklahoma squad, which looks to be well ahead of Baylor on paper.

Texas Longhorns

Odds
Big 12: +700
National Championship: +6000

New head coach Charlie Strong has brought some hope to the fans in Austin, but the process of getting the Longhorns back into the national title conversation will take some time.

Strong has already booted a number of players off the squad, and he won’t have the luxury of facing a soft AAC schedule any longer.
