Coach: Dabo Swinney
2008 Record: 7-6

The Clemson Tigers never really emerged like many experts thought they might.

Rollercoaster coach Tommy Bowden was axed last season and replaced by Dabo Swinney (sidenote: I challenge you to find me a name more tailor-made for the Deep South). As Clemson so badly bungled expectations last season, the team might fly under the radar in 2009 and might, just might, make an ACC title game. Sophomore and South Carolina-native Willy Korn guides this offense; Tiger fans pray that he’s a successful long-term fixture. Baseball player Kyle Parker is keeping Korn’s seat lukewarm. Ultra-talented tailback C.J. Spiller finally gets his time in the sun after backing up James Davis for a couple seasons – Spiller should be spilling yards and TDs all over the stat sheet.

As per usual, the defense is caked with athleticism.

Team Strengths
Defensive ends Ricky Sapp and Da’Quan Bowers should tear things up. This team has crazy speed; specimens like Spiller, WR Jacoby Ford, CB Chris Chancellor and safety DeAndre McDaniel will fly around the field and create match-up problems.

The offensive line is highly experienced and talented.

Team Weaknesses
We’ve only seen Korn attempt 38 career passes so he is a bit of a wildcard. However, he’s really athletic and has the targets to ease the learning curve. Parker and scrambling true frosh Tajh Boyd (recovering from a torn ACL) provide depth. The receivers lose all-time yardage leader Aaron Kelly.

While ‘Death Valley’ was much more like ‘Non-Life Threatening Injury Valley’ during Bowden’s tenure, Swinney intends to change the attitudes at this proud school.

The Tigers play Miami and Florida State, but other than that the schedule is manageable. Is it crazy to pick Clemson to win the ACC’s Atlantic division? We’ll see.

2009 Clemson Tigers Record Prediction: 10-3

Like most of the team, quarterback Cullen Harper also had a disappointing senior season. Willy Korn had all the hype heading out of high school and has done a decent job backing up Harper. However, redshirt freshman Kyle Parker is also in the mix. Parker is a more mobile quarterback who can create with his feet and that might be very important if the offensive line struggles as much as they did last season. Making matters worse for either quarterback is the absence of Aaron Kelly. The receiver led the team with 67 receptions for 722 yards and four touchdowns. Jacoby Ford will be the new go-to-guy, but the Tigers have to find another receiving option or two.
