CFB Matchup Tips: Handicapping 2015 Pac 12 Football Games

2015-16 Early-Season Football Matchups – (Pac-12)

The Pac-12 Conference saw a sudden shift in power during the 2009 season. Prior to that year, the USC Trojans had won (or been named co-champions) seven straight years. Since then, it’s been the Oregon Ducks/Stanford Cardinal show, but the Trojans have a solid chance to make up for that this year if they can exceed lofty expectations.

Pac-12 Preview

Although USC is looking like it could strike this season, it doesn’t have any non-conference games worth batting an eye at early in the season.

It does, however, have an early Pac-12 matchup against the rivaled Stanford Cardinal, which is where we’ll start.

USC Trojans vs. Stanford Cardinal

Date: Saturday, Sept. 19
Time: 8 p.m. ET
Venue: Los Angeles Memorial Colliseum
Odds: TBD

This matchup will be USC’s first opportunity to prove it’s worthy of all of the talk it’s receiving for Pac-12 championship consideration. The Cardinal aren’t quite what they were a couple of seasons ago, but they are still dangerous, especially in a rivalry setting.

Remember: USC was supposed to be back last season, so this is their chance to make people forget that they failed to live up to lofty expectations in 2014-15 — or at least keep people from bringing that up early in the year.

Texas A&M vs. Arizona State

Date: Saturday, Sept. 5
Time: 7 p.m. ET
Venue: NRG Stadium
Odds: TBD

This contest has the potential to be one of the most exciting Week 1 matchups in all of college football.

In what should be a bowl-like atmosphere, Texas A&M and Arizona State will face off on a neutral field to kick off the 2015-16 college football season. The Sun Devils have turned into a contender since Todd Graham took over, while the Aggies are looking to prove that last year’s 8-5 record was an anomaly.

Michigan Wolverines @ Utah Utes

Date: Thursday, Sept. 3
Time: 8 p.m. ET
Venue: Rice-Eccles Stadium
Odds: TBD

The Utah Utes aren’t the sexiest team in the Pac-12, and the Michigan Wolverines have been underwhelming to say the least for a while now. So why does this contest make the cut?

The Jim Harbaugh era will begin as soon as this one kicks off in Week 1 of the 2015-16 season.

The Utes will be favored in this one, but all eyes will be on Harbaugh and what he’s able to do early in his tenure with the Wolverines. Don’t get too excited and think one game will set the tone for the entirety of the season, but it will be interesting to see what he’s able to do as an underdog in the first contest of his newly established coaching career.

Washington Huskies @ Boise State Broncos

Date: Friday, Sept. 4
Time: 10:15 p.m. ET
Venue: Albertsons Stadium
Odds: TBD

Welcome home, Chris Petersen.

That will be the theme in Week 1, as Petersen makes his return to Albertsons Stadium for the first time since joining the Washington Huskies.

[dfads params=’groups=66501&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

While at Boise State, Peterson won 88 percent of his games and helped the program become known as true BCS busters. The crowd will be ready for this one, but Washington also has to deal with the fact that it has a questionable defense and returns just 10 starters from both sides of the ball.

Oregon Ducks @ Michigan State Spartans

Date: Saturday, Sept. 12
Time: 8 p.m. ET
Venue: Spartan Stadium
Odds: TBD

The Oregon Ducks had the luxury of hosting the Michigan State Spartans last season, and that luxury led to a 46-27 win over the then-ranked No. 7 Ben Ten foe thanks to a dominant second half.

This season, Oregon will attempt to do it again with two major inconveniences: Being on the road, and being without Marcus Mariota.

The size of the Spartans will likely give Oregon trouble both on offense and defense. Whoever is running quarterback in this one, whether it be Jeff Lockie or Vernon Adams, will rely on star tailback Royce Freeman to be ultra productive and take the pressure off the passing game.
