MAC Conference Football Previews: Buffalo

Head Coach: Jeff Quinn
2009 Record: 5-7

Buffalo Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

The MAC is a conference filled with “irrelevant” teams that don’t even have posted lines to win the BCS Championship.

The Buffalo Bulls are one of those teams but 2010 could be a year in which they put themselves on the map. With a new coach and an intriguing offense, could they take the conference by surprise?

Team Strengths:

New head coach Jeff Quinn was Brian Kelly’s offensive co-ordinator in Cincinnati, so he knows how to structure an effective hurry-up spread offense. Though some bettors may not believe so, a good look at Buffalo’s offensive pieces suggests that Quinn may have plenty to work with.

In sophomore Jerry Davis and freshman Alex Dennison, Buffalo doesn’t have an experienced quarterback to lean on. But the two kids have pushed each other hard all summer long and whoever wins the job will have plenty of support. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Bulls return all four of their starting offensive lineman and have two senior running backs, Brandon Thermilus and Ike Nduka, to carry the rock.

Defensively, Buffalo has a speedy group that defends the pass well – especially stud strong safety Davonte Shannon.

Team Weaknesses:

It would help if Buffalo’s QB had a proven, reliable downfield target but Naaman Roosevelt is gone. Can Terrell Jackson or Marcus Rivers step up?

While the Bulls do well against the pass, they give up too much size in exchange for their speed. Their D-line starters are just 6’1” and 252 pounds on average. Strong rushing attacks can really bludgeon Buffalo and tire its “D” out.

Buffalo 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 6-6

I think improved coaching and a solid run game could gain a “W” for Buffalo this season but I don’t think the Bulls will improve much more than that. Unless they show that their new passing attack is ready for prime time, opposing defenses will eventually key on their strength and stalk the box against their runners.

Expect a ho-hum 2010 but definitely some reason for optimism down the road.
