ACC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: BC Eagles

Coach: Frank Spaziani
2009 Record: 8-5

Boston College Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

Boston College is coming off a disappointing Emerald Bowl loss to Southern Cal in ’09, a USC team that looked like it could be taken advantage of. Still, the Eagles program had the emotional roller-coaster of losing their defensive leader, linebacker Mark Herzlich, for the season due to cancer treatment.

But Herzlich is back for this season and, joined with sophomore Luke Kuechly (who was a first-team Freshman All-American last year) should strike fear in ACC ballcarriers.

As goes the health of Herzlich, the linebacker corps in general and the productivity of RB Montel Harris, so will go the progress of the Eagles in 2010.

Team Strengths:

Harris scampered for 1,457 yards and an intrinsic 14 TDs last season. He absolutely carried the offense, as first-year starting QB Dave Shinskie had a so-so 15-14 ratio and the receivers weren’t game-breaking.

Another prolific year from Harris is important and attainable, given the Eagles’ excellent O-line. Left tackle Anthony Castonzo, guard Thomas Claiborne and massive RT Rich Lapham (6”8, 325 lbs) should lead the way in pouring the syrup.

The D will be led by Herzlich and Kuechly. Senior DE Alex Albright is no slouch, either.

Team Weaknesses:

Shinskie needs to make strides; it won’t be enough if BC is as one-dimensional as last season. The defensive secondary needs to make more plays, particularly at cornerback. Senior CB DeLeon Gause returns, but he had only one TFL and no picks in 2009.

Boston College also breaks in a redshirt freshman at kicker.

2010-2011 Boston College Football Prediction: 9-4

BC is one of those lucky teams that has a manageable schedule this season. Its only tough road game is at Florida State, while Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Clemson come to Chestnut Hill.

Provided Shinskie makes the kind of inroads most pivots do in their second year starting, and Herzlich can display his 2008 form, the Eagles are at punching weight with anyone else in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
