The college football season is getting closer and closer and it really seems that the national championship is wide open this year. We’ve covered each major conference and picked a winner; now it’s time to get more specific and break down exactly how each conference will play out.

The Big East is definitely one of the more intriguing conferences to predict in college football for the 2010 season. There’s a very good chance that six of the eight teams will have winning records and seriously compete to win it.

Here’s a predicted breakdown of how it will play out.

BIG EAST CONFERENCE

1. West Virginia
2. Pittsburgh
3. Rutgers
4. South Florida
5. Cincinnati
6. Connecticut
7. Syracuse
8. Louisville

My gut tells me it’s West Virginia’s year. It’s a season in which most of the Big East contenders have many questions marks and I believe the Mountaineers have the fewest. The only wild card appears to be Geno Smith under center, but even he still brings good athleticism to the table.

After that, the news is all good. Noel Devine is a beast in the backfield and will run behind a line that lost just one starter in the offseason. West Virginia could make strides on “D” as well with 10 returning starters.

Pittsburgh seems most likely to push West Virginia. It has a truly dynamic sophomore in Dion Lewis, who ran for 1,799 yards and scored 17 times last year. For the Panthers to make things interesting, though, they’ll have to hope their other key offensive youngster, Pat Bostik, makes big strides.

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Rutgers leapfrogged Pittsburgh in the standings this season. Mohamed Sanu is a really handy Swiss Army knife on offense and, with all the offseason roster changes in the Big East, Tom Savage is now the most experienced QB in the conference.

The only problem is that Rutgers’ linebacking corps is a weakness in a conference where their top competition runs the ball extremely well.

South Florida hopes B.J. Daniels can lead it to the Big East title. It also has a great group of defensive backs, but will that matter in a run-happy conference? Cincinnati just lost too many crucial players to be a force again in 2010. Tony Pike and Mardy Gilyard left for the NFL and leave massive offensive holes.

The “D” gets just five starters back. And head coach Marty Kelly infamously bolted late last year.

Connecticut’s great offensive makes it dangerous but I don’t think its defense is good enough.

BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: West Virginia 30, Pittsburgh 27
