Arkansas

There is still talent on this roster, enough I think to take advantage of a reeling Mississippi State squad that might just quit if things start off poorly again.  The game next week against LSU is another matter but it is irrelevant if the Razorbacks drop this one.  It adds a little juice to this divisional game that really means little to anyone else.

The Razorbacks can be a tough out because despite their record and performance they still have some very good offensive talent.  There aren’t many teams with a 4-6 record that could have a quarterback that might go in the first couple of rounds of the draft – Tyler Wilson – or a couple of backs that might also get drafted in Knile Davis and Dennis Johnson.  That is why this team has been such a head scratcher all season long, despite the turmoil.

It is no surprise given Arkansas’ underperformance that the Razorbacks have been a nightmare against the spread.  They are 2-7 ATS including 3 straight losses in SEC play.  The key in this one will be motivation.  If they are motivated to finish out the season strong then they can definitely keep this one close and maybe even win it.  With a lame duck coach though it is hard to tell.

Mississippi State

A few weeks ago when Mississippi State was 7-0 I hinted at the possibility of them losing their last five regular season games. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Part of that was estimating the quality of the Bulldogs and part of it was the quality of their schedule.  The performances haven’t been great but there is really no shame in losing to Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU on consecutive weekends.  This is one they have to have to stop the streak and have any momentum heading into the Egg Bowl to close the season.

Those three losses weren’t even close to being close games because the offense and defense just couldn’t get it done when the talent level was elevated compared to early in the season.  The only good thing during this run is that QB Tyler Russell might be setting himself up for a very good senior season as he has been playing better – at least statistically.  Mind you it is possible he is just piling up numbers in garbage time too.  They need to get off to better starts and can’t do it without him.

The Bulldogs have been streaky against the spread this season.  The pattern thus far has been win 2 ATS, lose 2 ATS, win 3 ATS and now lose 3 ATS.  If it is holding up then it might be time to jump on MSU but that is not a very confident way of playing it.  I think they can get the W they need to restore their confidence but there is little value on Mississippi State.
