Pac 10 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Arizona Wildcats

Coach: Mike Stoops
2009 Record: 8-5

It took some time, but it seems like the Wildcats are finally turning the corner under coach Mike Stoops. Stoops’ new QB coach, Frank Scelfo (the former head man at Tulane) has an intriguing project to tinker with in junior Nick Foles, a massive, prototypical pocket-passing Michigan State transfer.

With the Pac-10 being a total rat race this season, opportunity is knocking in Tucson. Will the Wildcats kick in the door, or get squashed by the likes of Oregon, California et al.?

Team Strengths:

Foles is 6”5, 245 lbs with a rocket arm. Not only does he have the measurables, he has the athletic receiver corps to squeeze the most out of their potential. Starters Delashun Dean, Juron Criner and Bug Wright all present match-up nightmares, be it with size or (in Wright’s case) speed.

The hogs up front are paced by center Colin Baxter and tackle Adam Grant. Senior DE Ricky Elmore tore up opposing offenses for 10.5 sacks in 2009. Additionally, CB Trevin Wade is one of the Pac-10’s (and maybe the entire FBS) best.

The special teams unit has plenty of experience and is in excellent shape.

Team Weaknesses:

Aside from superstars Elmore and Wade, the defense loses a huge amount of production this season. Five of the leading six tacklers are gone (CB Wade is the sixth!) and the attrition is most acutely felt in the linebacker corps. A glut of new starters must get comfortable quickly in such a talented conference.

The O-line breaks in a couple new starters, though guard Conan Amituanai and RT Phillip Garcia are both seniors.

2010-2011 Arizona Football Prediction: 10-3

The conference is a dogfight, but Arizona gets a glut of home games including Oregon, Stanford and UCLA. Its non-conference schedule – with the notable exception of Iowa – isn’t horrifying, and if Foles can respond like he should under Stoops and Scelfo, the offense will be plenty prolific.

It is really difficult to predict the Pac-10 this season given the extreme parity, but suffice it to say the Wildcats have as good a chance as any to make some noise and play in a great bowl game.
