Air Force Falcons 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-16 Football Previews – (MWC) – Falcons

After a 2014 season to remember, the Air Force Falcons are looking to take the conference by storm yet again during the 2015 NCAA Football Seans. The triple option offense has worked wonders for Troy Calhoun and company in the recent past, and this year, they will get to use it with an added threat that opponents are not used to.

The run-first Falcons are ready to see if opposing defenses will be able to keep up to their offensive onslaught this year.

Not many expected Air Force to finish how they did last season. After knocking off Boise State, Colorado State and the ever-important games with Navy and Army, the Falcons showed they were for real.

This season, they’re looking to improve upon their 10-3 finish with some even better production.

Let’s break down the team’s strengths and weaknesses in 2015.

Team Strengths

The biggest strength of the team, its running game, is fully intact for this upcoming season. Jacobi Owens, who just broke the 1,000 yard mark last season is back along with Shayne Davern and D.J. Johnson.

Throw in the aforementioned added threat of QB Nate Romine’s arm and this offense will keep defenses on their toes at all times.

While Romine was backup to Kale Pearson last season, he was the team’s starting signal caller in 2013. While he’s not as mobile as Pearson was, Romine has the football intelligence and the arm to drop passes behind defenses stacking the box against the run.

Despite being known as a run-first team, the team is returning its top five receivers from last season. Calhoun won’t give up on the run, but having an experienced receiving corps will help him mix the offense up enough to keep teams guessing what will come next.

Though it’s not a tangible strength, this Falcons squad is poised and confident that they can repeat last season’s performance, if not improve upon it.

Team Weaknesses

Air Force has some big holes to fill this season, starting with departed QB Kale Pearson. While Romine is a more than qualified replacement, he can’t match the fear that Pearson imposed on opponents in the ground game. An added issue is the loss of three offensive linemen, which will definitely impact the offense’s ability to perform some of the feats they managed last season.

On defense, the team will need to replace seven starters, including two starting linebackers and multiple defensive linemen. While the team’s scheme will help the new guys step in immediately, the lack of experience of the incoming starters could play a major role in how the defense performs.

The Falcons also lost their talented and very accurate placekicker, Will Conant. Handling both the punting and field goal duties last season, Conant was 19 of 21 on field goal attempts and averaged 43.6 yards per punt on 61 punt tries.

2015-16 Air Force Falcons Prediction: 7-5

Last year’s 10-win campaign was impressive for so many reasons. What you must consider, though, is how the team’s holes will affect them. Losing a powerful and accurate place kicker will show the Falcons how important field position is to their success.

Losing as many defensive starters as the Falcons did could hinder the offense and become a question of whether that offense can score more than the defense can give up.
