2015 Southeastern Conference: NCAA Football Gambling Predictions | Futures

2015 SEC Season Football Preview

It was another rough offseason for the SEC, which put forth a poor showing during bowl season, and for the second consecutive season, failed to win the national championship. The conference darling, Alabama, even endured a second consecutive loss in its bowl game, even if it was to eventual national champion Ohio State.

Auburn lost its bowl game to a Big Ten opponent in Wisconsin, LSU fell to a Notre Dame team that was miserable in the second half of last season, Ole Miss got throttle by an inspired TCU team, and Mississippi State was torn apart by Georgia Tech.

Amazingly, that’s what followed the greatest regular season by any division in the history of college football, as each member of the SEC West qualified for postseason play, only to have the division’s collective bubble burst come the postseason. Only Arkansas and Texas A&M were able to win their bowl games.

The following is a look at a few of the top contenders to win this season’s conference title, along with their odds.

Alabama +250

As good as Alabama’s 2014 season was, it will go down as a failure in Tuscaloosa as the team failed to win the national title. Expectations have risen sharply in Nick Saban’s tenure with the program, and it’s really title or bust at this point for the Crimson Tide.

The top priority for Saban and his staff during preseason camps is to figure out who the team’s quarterback will be this season. As much talent as there will be around that player – whoever he is – the team will need more than just a caretaker at the position if it is to reach its lofty goals.

Blake Sims took a stranglehold of the job a year ago and single-handedly won the team some games. Florida State transfer Jake Coker is the frontrunner entering preseason camp after getting beaten out by Sims for the job a year ago.

Auburn +350

The 2013 Auburn team enjoyed plenty of good fortune along the way to winning the SEC and making an appearance in the national title game. First, there was the catch Ricardo Louis made to save the day against Georgia, then Chris Davis’s spectacular return against Alabama to win the Iron Bowl.

Last year’s edition of the team didn’t enjoy the same breaks, losing four of its last five games. But things should be different this season. Jeremy Johnson should make the offense even more potent with his ability to hurl the pigskin, and the addition of Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator figures to solve most of the issues the defense endured a year ago.

Georgia +550

The SEC West is where most of the talent is, but that just means there’s an easier road to the SEC title game through the East. Missouri has won the division in back-to-back seasons, but Georgia had a direct path to getting to the Georgia Dome a year ago had it not stumbled in Gainesville.

Mark Richt’s team will be led by breakout running back Nick Chubb and a deep group of linebackers.

If the Bulldogs can stay healthy this season, they’ll be the team to beat in the East.
