2015 Pac-Twelve Conference: NCAA Football Gambling Predictions | Futures

2015 Pac-12 Season Football Preview

For what seemed like an entire decade, the USC Trojans were the dominant force in the Pac-12 during the early 2000s. But since that reign of terror from the Southern California institution, the conference has seen the Oregon Ducks and Stanford Cardinal win the past six titles dating back to 2009.

This year, the Trojans are expected to get back to dominance. Then again, we were saying the same thing to start the 2014 season as well.

The following is a look at a few of the top contenders to win the 2015 Pac-12 Championship, along with their odds (via BetOnline).

USC Trojans (+200)

The Trojans are looking to do what they couldn’t do last season: Live up to lofty expectations. Although this program hasn’t completely recovered since enduring punishments through the NCAA, it’s done enough to stay relevant in the eyes of oddsmakers — to the point of being the Pac-12 favorites in 2015.

The biggest reason this team is considered a favorite is the man behind center. Led by Cody Kessler, this group has a legitimate opportunity to be one of the most potent offenses in the country. As a junior last season, Kessler completed nearly 70 percent of his passes. He also tossed for 39 touchdowns to just five interceptions.

Combine a Heisman hopeful QB with 14 total returning starters and an embarrassment of riches at wide receiver, and you have yourself a team that’s not just looking for a conference title, but a berth in the second-annual College Football Playoffs.

Oregon Duks (+275)

Marcus Mariota is gone, and that’s a problem for the Oregon Ducks. This team has lost arguably the best player to ever suit up in Eugene to the NFL, and making up the difference isn’t going to be easy.

Luckily for the Ducks, they’ve lived by their Next Man Up mantra for the past five or six seasons, and that’s what they’ll look to keep in place in 2015.

Although there’s still a battle at quarterback taking place between Vernon Adams and Jeff Lockie, we already know who the staple of the offense will be: Royce Freeman. The talented back used his combination of speed and strength to bulldoze the competition straight into the starting spot as a true freshman last season. The receiving core on this roster should be improved from last season, which will help whoever takes over behind center. But the true go-to playmaker should be Freeman — a sleeper pick for the Heisman Trophy.

UCLA (+450)

Like the Ducks, the UCLA Bruins are looking to replace one of the top quarterback in the country. Brett Hundley has taken his talents to the NFL, but the program is lucky enough to have quarterback Josh Rosen ready to step into his place.

The nation’s top recruit at QB, Rosen seems to be the kind of player who is willing and able to step in and immediately replace the QB of the past. He’s also lucky to have the Pac-12’s leader in rushing yards on his side, Paul Perkins, to help relieve him of the pressure of being a newcomer.

On top of that, this group has 17 of its 22 starters returning. That’s a recipe for success no matter how you spin it.

Stanford Cardinal (+650)

In typical Stanford Cardinal fashion, this team dominated defensively last season. They were second in the nation in terms of points allowed, but they went just 8-5 on the season.

Although the team went 4-1 against its own division, it also went just 5-4 against the Pac-12 as a whole, and just 1-5 against top-25 programs.

This team needs to be better against elite competition this season, or else teams such as Arizona State could sneak ahead of it on this list.
