2015 MAC Conference: NCAA Football Betting Picks | Futures

2015 MACĀ Season Football Preview

The Mid American Conference has always been a fun conference for bettors. It starts mid season when the ESPN family of networks picks up the MAC conference games and nationally televises them on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. This gives bettors opportunities to really see the MAC in action and since they’re stand alone games, a lot of money is bet on them.

In 2014, Northern Illinois came out of the West to roll over Bowling Green in the title game 51-17. The Huskies feat was quite surprising as they came into the MAC Championship as just 4 point favorites over Bowling Green.

The MAC was well represented in 2014 as they were featured in 5 Bowl Games.

Here is a look at the top contenders in 2015, along with their odds.

Northern Illinois 9/4

The defending champs open the 2015 season as favorites to win the MAC. They’ll be lead by JR QB Drew Hare who led them to their 2014 MAC Championship and Boca Raton Bowl appearance.

Hare threw for 2322 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2014. His major accomplishment was the fact that he threw just 2 interceptions all season long. Hare was also a threat on the ground as he rushed for 8 touchdowns and had 180 and 166 yard rushing games in the middle of the season.

The Huskies rushing attack ranked 17th overall in all of FBS football in 2014 and theirĀ overall offense ranked 39th.

The question mark in 2015 for the Huskies will be the at the RB position. 2014 RB Cameron Stingily was an absolute tank in the backfield. He ran for 971 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2014. Replacing him will be a tough task and will also put more pressure on Hare to run the ball more consistently.

Bowling Green 5/2

The Falcons come in defending champs of the MAC East and winners of the 2014 Camellia Bowl as they defeated South Alabama 33-28 thanks to a late 78 yard touchdown pass.

Bowling Green finished just 8-6 in 2014, but the MAC East featured a lot of bad teams which allowed the Falcons to win that side of the MAC.

The Falcons will have now JR QB James Knapke back. Knapke did throw for 3173 yards, but his interception number was a major problem. He threw 12 interceptions to just 15 touchdowns.

The biggest question mark for Bowling Green in 2015 will be their defense. They have a very young, inexperienced defensive lineup that will likely allow a lot points in 2015. If their defense can grow and mature quickly, Bowling Green could have a ton of success this season.

Western Michigan 4/1

Western Michigan finished 8-5 in 2014 and had one of the best passing offenses in the mid major grouping. Things could have been totally different in 2014 for the Broncos as they held a 21-7 lead over the Northern Illinois Huskies, but allowed a late comeback to beat them. Had they won that game, they would have been in the MAC Championship.

The offense averaged 33.8 points per game in 2014 and allowed just 24.9. Expect similar numbers from them in 2015.

They’ll have Zach Terrell back under center in 2015 as the now Jr. looks to repeat his 2014 performance. Terrell threw for 3443 yards and 26 touchdowns.

At 4/1 to win the MAC the Broncos offer a lot of value for bettors.

Toledo 4/1

Toledo has been close it seems like every year at winning the MAC West, but always comes up just short. They averaged 36.6 points a game in 2014, but the QB injuries played a vital role in their dismay. At one point they had to call on a WR to play QB because everybody was getting injured.

Their most successful QB was Logan Woodside. He threw for 19 touchdowns and 2263 yards. His late injuries down the stretch of the season were one of the main reasons why Toledo couldn’t win the MAC West. If he can stay healthy, this could be the year for the Rockets.

They’ll have to beat Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, which is something they haven’t typically done. It will likely come down to these three teams for the West with whoever can win the head-to-head match ups coming out on top.
