2015 Big-Twelve Conference: NCAA Football Gambling Predictions | Futures

2015 Big 12 Football Season Preview

The 2014 season was a bit of a nightmare for the Big 12. The conference had two teams emerge as candidates for the inaugural College Football Playoff, but that left the conference brass in a pickle when it came to naming a conference champion as both finished with identical 11-1 records.

The end result was a surprising final poll which saw both TCU and Baylor on the outside looking in. After an offseason which featured a lot of dialogue but little in the way of change, the conference will proceed without a title game once again, despite protests from some of its athletic directors and school presidents to expand and get back to 12 teams so as to facilitate a title game.

Entering 2015, the big dogs remain the same. TCU and Baylor will again be the class of the conference, but Oklahoma appears ready to re-enter the race for the top spot. Either way, everyone involved will be happy to get on the field and put an end to the chatter regarding the process by which the conference determines its champion.

The following is a look at a few of the top contenders to win this season’s conference title, along with their odds.

TCU +150

If anyone deserves to complain about the way the College Football Playoff spots were handed out, it’s TCU. The Horned Frogs’ only loss came in a 61-58 shootout loss at Baylor, and the team’s final game before the four playoff spots were decided was a 55-3 thrashing of Iowa State, yet they dropped three spot in the rankings and out of the playoff.

The offense will again be potent, with guys like Trevone Boykin and Josh Doctson returning as seniors. In fact, the bulk of the key returning seniors for Gary Patterson’s squad are seniors, putting the team in position to make a legitimate run at the Big 12 and national titles.

Baylor +275

Baylor returns 18 starters this year, but loses some real talent on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Bryce Petty and standout wide receivers Antwan Goodley and Levi Norwood are all gone, but Art Briles has done a fine job on the recruiting trail, making Waco an attractive destination for offensive talent.

Briles’s offense has with the Bears has been successful with Robert Griffin III, Nick Florence, and Bryce Petty under center, so it seems safe to say Seth Russell will be just fine. They’ll need to beat TCU again to claim the Big 12 title, and that seems less likely to happen in Fort Worth.

Oklahoma +550

Oklahoma has enjoyed plenty of success during the Bob Stoops era, and again enters this season with the talent to make a run at the College Football Playoff. After a down year in 2014, during which the team lost four of its final seven games, including an embarrassing loss to Clemson, many are wondering if the team can compete at the highest level again, even with an influx of talent.

The Sooners will have an early litmus test with a trip to Tennessee to take on the Volunteers in the second week of the season. That’s how we’ll know if they’re truly back or not.
