UNC Coach Roy Williams’ approach may be awful for spread bettors but this team is still the favourite to win, especially with Duke missing forward Ryan Kelly this weekend. They didn’t play all that well but still put up 85 points in an easy victory over Maryland.
That doesn’t bode well for the Wolfpack who are desperate for a win.
It was a team effort in the win against Maryland with four Tar Heels scoring between 13 and 15 points.
They got some bad news when John Henson left the game due to injury but the reality is that as good as he is this team can win without him. In his stead PJ Hairston chipped in 9 points and four rebounds as the Tar Heels pulled away.
Henson, or no Henson, UNC still has more than enough to beat their rivals NC State. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
NC State
I am not sure the Wolfpack have done enough with their victory over Virginia to feel secure but if they can upset the rival Tar Heels they should be in the tournament. Although if that happens they will be just a single victory from guaranteed entry so why stop there.
They would have a ton of momentum heading into the finals and if they are playing a team with a bid already secured who knows.
In beating Virginia forward C.J. Leslie was a monster. He had 19 points on 9 of 11 from the field and added 12 rebounds as well.
The only thing he didn’t do was make his free throws (1 for 6) in fact the whole team struggled from the stripe (8 for 20). On Saturday they are going to be the lesser talented team by far and they won’t be able to overcome that kind of poor shooting performance.
UNC may not be perfect but the Wolfpack will have to play close to a perfect game to beat them.
