Albany Great Danes vs. Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers Gambling & NCAA Handicapping Prediction

2014 NCAA Tournament – Play In Game Pick

I want to go on record again and say that I think it is shabby that automatic qualifiers have to play in these play in games…its just not fair. That aside the Great Danes are probably happy with their draw of MSMU, a team they beat in 2010 and 2011. [ad-4468020]

Albany

Albany finished fourth in the America East this season but they are no strangers to the tournament having gone dancing last season. They didn’t embarrass themselves either in their loss to to Duke in the round of 64.

The Great Danes leading scorer is Peter Hooley, who played all 40 minutes in the America East title game, but it was forward Sam Rowley that was the difference maker leading the team with 18 points.

Rowley is one of those typical small college undersized forwards who just gets it done. Though only 6’5” he is the team’s leading rebounder.

In a story that I am sure will get play if they advance he also has his younger brother Mike on the team, who is actually 3 inches taller.

Albany’s only had three numbered games all season long (all in the America East tournament) and they covered all three. That is not a lot to go on but their experience from last year probably means they should be a larger favourite that the 2.5 points they are currently getting. I like their chance to advance and cover.

Especially that they shoot 73% from the free throw line as a team.

Mount St. Mary’s

It would seem the Mountaineers are the least deserving squad in the field right now as they needed to win the NEC tournament just to push their record to .500 on the season. At least they knocked off top seed Robert Morris though. This is a team that likes to score with an offense ranked in the top 50 scoring 76ppg.

Led by some highly productive guards they have a chance of pushing their season another couple of days.

Guards Rashad Whack and Julian Norfleet both average better than 17ppg.

They combined for 37 points in the championship game against the Colonials – a game that was essentially over by halftime thanks to some very hot shooting. The Mountaineers are undersized as well with Gregory Graves their leading rebounder at 6”7”.

Odds are which ever team can do the job on the glass will get the victory.

The real question for this one is whether the Mountaineers can continue to maintain their elevated state of play.

They have a couple of nice scorers and shouldn’t embarrass themselves but I think the bubble is about to pop. If they won though it wouldn’t be a total shock.

Its not like Albany is a dynasty.

Spread prediction: Albany -2.5
