ATS Matchup Insight | CP Insider Gambling Preview

The Longhorns didn’t have nearly as much success against Arizona State, but as they say: A win is a win. Texas snuck away with an 87-85 win over No. 10 Arizona State, and the winning shot came with fewer than one second on the clock, creating arguably the most dramatic finish of the 2014 NCAA Tournament thus far.

Texas

The Texas Longhorns are a very good basketball team, but let’s be honest: They snuck away with a win against the No. 10 Arizona State Sun Devils.

The game went to overtime, and if it wasn’t for a last-second recovery from Cameron Riley, the Longhorns’ fate could have been far different.

All that said, expect No. 7 Texas to come out more focused against Michigan. The team scored 87 points against ASU—13.1 points greater than its season average—but it allowed 85 in overtime—15.5 more than the average on the year.

Michigan averages 75 points per game on the season, but luckily for the Longhorns, they’re going up against a Wolverines team that showed an inability to score despite coming up with a big win.

Texas’ backcourt is both undersized and inexperienced, and while those two characteristics play against it, the trio of guards create matchup nightmares for opponents of all kinds.

The problem is that despite being undersized, the threesome can’t make up the difference with outside shooting, as Javan Felix is the only threat from beyond the arc despite shooting just 33 percent from the three-point line on the season.

Michigan

Michigan may have the edge in the backcourt, but the edge in the frontcourt goes to Texas.

If the Big Ten championship showed anything, it’s that Michigan, despite having players with solid frames up front, can’t handle athleticism at this point in the process.

Texas has athleticism all over the floor, especially in the frontcourt, which should present matchup problems for the Wolverines.

Expect the Wolverines to run a zone defense against the Longhorns.

This strategy won’t work against a number of tournament squads, as three-point shooting has become a priority in today’s college basketball, but against Texas, expect it to be a strategy that works and forces Texas out of the paint and onto the perimeter.

The Wolverines will have a much tougher go-around in Round 3, but the Longhorns don’t have the firepower to pull the upset.

Prediction: Michigan 73 – Texas 67
