The Virginia Commonwealth Rams won an ugly one in their First Four tilt with the Trojans on Wednesday in Dayton and will now prepare to do tangle with the sixth seeded Georgetown Hoyas, in a Southwest Region Round One game on Friday.

Now the real test begins for the Rams, who are making their second tournament appearance in the last three years. VCU made quick work of USC in the in the First Four round on Wednesday, advancing to the second round, with a dominating 59-46 win.

However, things didn’t go quite as smoothly as the final score may indicate as the Rams fell into early foul trouble. They were, though, able to maintain their composure and regroup, putting together an effective effort in shutting down the Trojans bigs, while draining a barrage of three-pointers in the second half. Overall, it was a scrappy and a sloppy game with a lot of turnovers and poor shot selection, but a win is a win.

Meanwhile, Georgetown returns to the tournament four years removed from their last victory in the big dance. The Hoyas seemed poised to make a run at the Big East title early in the regular season, but went from being one of the most consistent teams in college basketball, to one that couldn’t find its scoring grove after second-leading scorer Chris Wright suffered a broken bone in his non-shooting hand back in February.

Georgetown did get some good news just a day before selection Sunday, finding out that Wright was cleared to play in Hoyas second round tournament game come Friday against the Rams.. Combined with the star-studded talent of senior Austin Freeman, who is as leads the team with 17.9 PPG. Freeman along with Wright gives the Hoyas a huge advantage offensively.

G’Town will have to readjust and could stutter as they try to regain their scoring rhythm, which still leaves them on the edge of an upset. Moreover, VCU is just the team that can do it too. I’m sure the locker has been buzzing with pep talks of how they dismantled perennial favorite Duke in 2007 and then UCLA, in 2009.

The Rams rely on balanced scoring, having four players averaging at least 11 points, and another two over five points per game. They love to run and gun and will throw up a barrage of three-pointers. Forward Jamie Skeen, should keep the G’Town defense honest, but I expect it will not be enough.

Recent CBB Betting Trends:
Under is 6-2 in VCU last 8 overall.
Under is 10-4 in GT last 14 NCAA Tournament games.

Pick: If Georgetown can get back into their early season rhythm, they should be able to take out the Rams.
