Even without Blue II court side, the Butler Bulldogs feel that they can still recapture the magic of last year’s run to the NCAA national title tournament finals. Matt Howard has led last year’s Cinderella team back to the Sweet 16, and although there are still a couple of key obstacles in their way this Butler team has shown some of the same signs as last year’s team. The Bulldogs have persevered and performed under pressure with both of their first two tournament games going down to the wire, and have turned it up at notch at the right time to peak when it matters the most.
Howard will need to be at his best once again as the Bulldogs get set to meet the fourth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers in the Sweet 16. The senior forward has averaged 16.7 points per game and 7.7 rebounds, which are both team-highs. He will be pushed hard by a Badgers’ defense that has been strong over the past couple of weeks, and need to perform his best against an offense that has come alive after an awful start to the end of their Big Ten season. Wisconsin scored 98 point combined in its final two games against conference opponents, but have bounced back with at least 70 in each of their first two tournament games.
The Badgers allowed Kansas State Wildcats’ guard Jacob Pullen to score 35 in a 70-65 third round win, using more of a team approach to get the job done with their offense. Jon Leuer led four scorers that registered double-digit point totals with 19, and that has helped them overcome a terrible 7.56 turnovers per game. Wisconsin will need to tighten up its ball security if they are going to have any chance of getting through to the Final Four, and it won’t be easy against a Bulldogs’ team that likes to bump and grind.
There is only so long that the Bulldogs can continue to benefit from other team’s miscues, but after watching the way the Panthers gave away the game in the dying seconds there is reason to believe that there may be an intimidation factor in play. The aura that has been born of Butler’s ability to get the job done in tournament play is fierce, and will be another element that helps them overcome a tough test from Wisconsin.
