Matchup Stats | ATS Insider Preview

SMU’s three-game winning streak was snapped in its last outing against Louisville, while Memphis has alternated wins and losses over its last four games.

This game means more than it might appear to SMU, as they can lock up the No. 3 seed in the American Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday.

They would guarantee that spot with a win in Saturday’s regular season finale, avoiding a rematch with the Tigers in Dallas. Things could get a little messy if they lose and Connecticut loses, as that would mean a three-way tiebreaker for that No. 3 seed between these two teams and UConn.

SMU would win that on the back of a 3-1 combined record against those two teams. An SMU loss and a Connecticut win would see SMU and Memphis face off again in Thursday’s quarterfinals right back at the FedExForum.

As for Memphis, a win and losses by Louisville and Cincinnati would move the team up to the No. 4 seed, thanks to a 2-2 record against those clubs, compared with SMU’s 1-3 record.

While SMU gets this game on the road, they did just fine in their last game away from home, taking down UConn 64-55 on Feb. 23.

The team did fall in its last game, 84-71 against Louisville despite shooting 51.1 percent from the floor, and getting a season-high 18 points from guard Nick Russell.

The Mustangs surrendered a season-high 13 three-pointers in that game against the Cardinals, something head coach Larry Brown would surely like to have corrected by Saturday.

As for Memphis, they’ve won eight in a row in their own building, including a 72-66 win over Louisville last Saturday, though they enter this game coming off a loss at Cincinnati by a score of 97-84, allowing the Bearcats to score their second-highest point total of the season.

The Tigers managed 52 points in the second half of that one, though they allowed the Bearcats to score 59 points after the break. Guard Joe Jackson paced the team with 21 points and six assists.

These teams have split their last six meetings, though it’s been the home side that has prevailed each time, with Memphis having won seven in a row at home in the series, including an 18-point win on their home court in 2012.

Expect to see the Tigers bounce back, as the team is 37-4 in games following a loss under head coach Josh Pastner.

The home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings between these teams, and the Tigers are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games following an ATS loss.

The play: Memphis -4
