The East Region in this year’s NCAA Men’s Tournament will wrap-up Friday’s second round action with the No.14 seed Indiana State Sycamores trying to upset the No.3 seed Syracuse Orange in a 9:57 p.m. tip. The game will be played at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland and broadcast nationally on truTV.

Indiana State earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with an impressive run through the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament culminating in a 60-56 win over Missouri State as a five-point underdog in the championship game. It comes into this game with an overall record of 20-13 straight-up and is 21-11 against the spread.

The Sycamores are led by Dwayne Lathan, who is averaging 11 points and 4.8 rebounds a game, and Carl Richard, who is the leading rebounder with 6.6 a game and the second leading scorer with 9.8 points. Indiana State is shooting 43 percent from the field and averaging 66 points a game.

Syracuse earned a No.4 seed for the NCAA’s with an overall record of 26-7 SU (14-17 ATS) and a tie for the third-best record in the Big East at 12-6 SU. The Orange made it all the way to the semifinals of the conference tournament before losing the eventual champion Connecticut 76-71 in overtime as a four-point favorite.

Kris Joseph, Rick Jackson, and Scoop Jardine have provided the bulk of the production for Syracuse this season. Joseph is averaging a team-high 14.4 points and five rebounds a game. Jackson is the leading rebounder with 10.6 a game and Jardine leads in assists with 5.8. The Orange are averaging 74 points a game and have been effective under the boards with 38 rebounds a game.

The odds makers are showing a bit of respect for the Sycamores with just an 11 ½-point spread, but it will not be enough against a vastly superior Syracuse team. This game amounts to nothing more than a brisk late-night workout for the Orange as they easily win and cover.

Trends:
INDST are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games overall.
Over is 20-8 in SYR last 28 neutral site games.

The Pick: Syracuse -11.5
