The No.5 seed St. John’s Red Storm have advanced to face the No.4 seed Syracuse Orange this Thursday afternoon in the second game of the quarterfinal round of this year’s Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

St. John’s won its first game of this tournament with a thrilling last-second 65-63 victory over No.13 seed Rutgers as a 10-point favorite, but unfortunately this game will be remembered for the final 1.7 seconds that were never played as the officials blew an out of bounds call that would have given the Scarlet Knights the ball with that much time on the clock. Regardless of the mistake, the final score stands and the Red Storm advances on to the quarterfinals.

Dwight Hardy had a game-high 17 points and Sean Evans added 13 points of the bench to lead the scoring in this game. St. John’s shot 45.8 percent from the field and hit 78.3 percent of its attempts from the foul-line which was a dramatic improvement over its 71.2 percent season average.

A well-rested Syracuse will see its first action in this tournament after earning a double-bye as the fourth seed. The Orange finished the regular season with five straight wins to run their record to 25-6 straight-up overall (13-16 against the spread) and to 12-6 SU in Big East play.

This team features a trio of big-time players in Kris Joseph, Rick Jackson, and Scoop Jardine. Joseph leads the team in scoring with an average of 14.2 points a game and Jackson is the leading rebounder with 10.7 a game. Jardine is averaging 12.6 points a game and a team-high six assists. Syracuse is scoring an average of 74 points and pulling down 38 rebounds a game.

Syracuse beat St. John’s 76-59 on Jan. 12 as a three-point road favorite, but the Red Storm are playing much better than when the teams first met. Do not be afraid to ride out the storm as St. John’s uses its home court advantage to make a deep run this week.
